Merge

  • Oppose merging. This article is about drug trade in a macro-economic context, more as an economic or state-control mechanism than the specifics of drugs, their nicknames, and stuff, that occurs in the Illegal drug trade article. However, that other article can/should link back here a bit more prominently (I added a brief "See also" link. That said, this one could certainly use some cleanup.   • Oppose merging. "Illegal drug trade" article is already huge. This is supposed to be a marxist concept, if I understand well. Narco-states shouldn't even be redirected to here. I'm removing the "merge". Tazmaniacs 20:52, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Pyat rublei 1997.jpg

Image:Pyat rublei 1997.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Kick-back list of narco-states?

I came here reading a wiki-pedia article about [New-Guinnea]. Is it possible to automatically make a list from all articles on e.g. countries that have the term in them? --SvenAERTS (talk) 02:22, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Much of the original article was unencyclopedic, I just made the minimal pertinent substub alterations (see RC Patrol for slightly greater details). The Tijuana portion need to be better qualified (and worded), so I omitted it for now. El_C 04:20, 26 August 2004 (UTC)

Where is this term used? I certainly have never heard it before, though I have heard "narcoterrorism," ie Colombia. J. Parker Stone 10:17, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

I have, though tis pretty obscure. See this RC Patrol diff from 25 August 2004, or in Third Annual Staff Development Conference, University of Wisconsin System Institute of Global Studies (PDF), for example, mention the term. Adding timestamps above. Memories... El_C 11:48, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

  • Comment from the article, the three terms "narco-state", "narco-capitalism", "narco-economy" seem like three interrelated but different terms. If you take their derivations, then one would be a country deeply entwined in drugs, the second the financial workings of the drug world, the third, the economic sector based on drugs... -- 76.65.131.248 (talk) 18:05, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

  • For this issue, I felt the best metric was to look at Google Scholar for how academics are using the terms. A quick look at Google Scholar shows a distinct preference for Narco-state with 827 for Narco-state over 58 for Narco-capitalism. However, when I removed Afghanistan from the search, Narco-state decreased to 286 and Narco-Capitalism decreased to 43, which may indicate a specific term for one country but a still more general term. However, reading through the Google Scholar hits, it seems "Narco-State" is a preferred, common, and recognizable term, while "Narco-Capitalism" is significantly less common.   • I think the IP comment in the survey is right. These terms shouldn't necessarily mean the same thing, and I would think "narco-economy" would be the overarching concept. --BDD (talk) 20:10, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
'Narco-economy' is too inclusive in my opinion. It could include non-government sanctioned local black markets, while this page seems to refer to states (i.e. economies) that are actively involved in the illegal drug trade. 'Narco-economy' is better than 'narco-capitalism', but I think 'narco-state' is the most descriptive term. jonkerz ♠talk 13:00, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Afghanistan?
