Struck-through content[edit]

A few hours ago, I removed <s> tags from markup in this article's infobox and lede. I've been reverted, with the edit summary "strike tags needed for former airport codes". We don't use strike-through for such purposes; it's not clear to our readers that it carries that meaning and it's not accessible to people using assistive software. Sorry for reverting your edit, but it does seem to be standard practice to use strike tags for the airport codes of defunct airports, e.g. Kaanapali Airport and Kai Tak Airport. -Zanhe (talk) 11:57, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Struck-through text would be rendered as normal text by most folks using a screen reader. If you want to indicate that the codes are no longer in use, then state that clearly, or use a footnote if space is at a premium. I've made an edit to demonstrate an accessible alternative, feel free to adapt or alter as you see fit. I'd strongly recommend you make similar improvements to the inaccessible parts of the other airport articles like Kaanapali Airport and Kai Tak Airport that suffer from the same problem. --RexxS (talk) 13:42, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, as a screen reader user, I agree that footnotes are much better for this purpose. See a comment I made about this issue several years ago, but that was in a somewhat different context. Graham87 17:19, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all your comments. I wasn't aware of the accessibility issue. It does appear that using footnotes is a better solution. -Zanhe (talk) 22:18, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
