"He's On Fire"[edit]

Players in the game[edit]

If memory serves me correctly, the following players came and went on the NBA Jam franchise. I believe losing some star players did not help the franchise long term

  • Shaq was in the original arcade game but not on the console versions (nor subsequent arcade versions)
  • Charles Barkley was on the original arcade and console version but not in subsequent versions like Tournament Edition etc.
  • I heard a rumour that Michael Jordan was on the original arcade version at first but was subsequently removed so that later arcade machines did not have him. He certainly did not appear in console versions.

  • Micahel Jordan was missing in a lot of basketball games at the time. I remember playing with many "Roster Players" doing everything on the court. I think it may be an issue like with Barry Bonds not being part of the Player's Union and the publisher not wanting to pay extra for him.--Attitude2000 03:47, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does anybody have a cross-referenced list of rosters by system and version of the game? I think this is where a lot of confusion comes in. I've been looking around and haven't found anything definitive yet on this. - I know the SNES had two versions of the original NBA JAM. As the copy I used to hire from the local video store had Charles Barkley and Kevin Johnson, but the copy I bought later had Kevin Johnson and Dan Majerle. There was one other change to a roster too, I think it was Shawn Kemp and Payton and the other had Kemp and Detlef Shrempf.   • Shaq was included in the first makings of the NBA JAM ports, or at least on the SNES version, he can still be unlocked using PAR codes.
  • Charles Barkley & Gary Payton did make it onto at least the first release of NBA JAM on SNES, they where later removed and in their places where subbed Dan Marjle and Something Gill? Terry? (my memories not that great on who the Sonics replacment was)
  • Mark Turmwell said in an interview not that long ago that Gary Payton and Michael Jordan approached him and asked why they where not included in NBA JAM? Mark said something along the lines he expected the licensing to be too big, but MJ and Payton insisted they be put into the game. So a limited amount of machines where made (NBA JAM v4.2 or something) and sent off with rosters containing MJ and Payton on Arcade machines, however, no one seems to be able to track one of these machines down to even make a rom of it. 114.76.125.212 (talk) 19:38, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Battlezone[edit]

I remember there was a trick to play a free game of Battlezone in some versions of the arcade game. Can anyone add the relevant info on that? -- LGagnon 20:09, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you had to hold the player 1 joystick in the down-left position, and the player 2 joystick in the down-right position and then hold down both shoot and pass buttons down for each player and you would then enter the Battlezone game. But it was all filled in vector graphics version, not wire-frame. Also as soon as you were shot once it was game over, back to NBA Jam again.

Changes[edit]

NBA Showtime and NBA Hangtime should both be added, but I don't know how Wikipedia decides to use separate titles, or just have the information on the main page.

Was the game really coded entirely in assembly? I'd like to see some backup info on that, I've never heard of that.

In 1996, Blockbuster Video and Midway Games had a NBA JAM Tournament at each store, the player who scored the most points in one game against the computer received two free rentals every month for one year.

NBA JAM Tournament edition had national tournaments run by NANI in 1995 and 1996, the machines were linked across phone lines, like Golden Tee games were/age. Ryan Lamb won them both, I have the receipts the game printed out and prizes (32" TV from 1995, Arch Rivals arcade game in 1996) to prove it (and as good as I am at NBA Jam, I totally suck ass at spelling and grammar).

Such lists of characters usually end up getting deleted from video game articles with edit summaries referencing WP:GAMECRUFT, point 6. You're all missing one of the most classic quotes in the game:

"It's good!" though that quote was mostly notable for the way in which the commentator said it, rather than the quote itself.

Updated rosters in Sega CD version[edit]

The Sega CD version of this game featured updated team rosters, but this article makes no mention of this. Anyone who knows the Sega CD rosters (I've never played it) should add them to the rosters section of the article.

UPDATE 2: Alright, after checking out the Sega CD, Game Boy, and Game Gear versions of the game over the net, I have updated the article to contain every roster difference.

NBA Jam Halftime Report (Altitude with an attitude)[edit]

Merge with NBA Jam Tournament Edition[edit]

meh. NBA Jam really made its name as an arcade game, which was then ported to popular consoles at the time. The NBA Jam Tournament Edition doesn't sound like it had a wildly different impact than other console NBA basketball games. If anything, it could be trimmed down to a mention here. If it is judged that having the rosters listed at all is encyclopedic, then it needs its own article.Cander0000 (talk) 23:33, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cheer Leader is Sonya Blade?[edit]

Can anyone confirm it was just a rumor or if it was fact. But there was a screen on the NBA JAM arcade that showed two cheerleaders, i think it might have been a "don't do drugs" picture or just an attention getter, but they say the blond girl is who was who did the motion capture for Sonya Blade in the original Mortal Kombat game. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.76.118.220 (talk) 10:55, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The cheerleaders were former Playboy models Kerri Hoskins (who was Sonya in Mortal Kombat 3, among other Midway roles) and Lorraine Olivia. They were pictured in the attract mode ("Let's play two on two!"), as well as on the ending screen that appears after a player defeats all the NBA teams. NBA Jam (2003 release) PS2 and Xbox[edit]

Did everyone forget or not even play this version of NBA Jam? It's almost impossible to find any information of it online let alone the (original) Xbox version. This was an awesome upgrade and conglomeration of the classic NBA Jam and the 3D, NBA on NBC Showtime games. If you compare the 2003 (console exclusive) to the new 2010... the 2010 is a HUGE step backwards! Jordan and Shaq were in the original arcade game[edit]

Hi,

The article should be updated regarding Jordan. I played NBA JAM in the arcade when it first game out. Jordan and Shaq were both in the game. I believe it was less than a month later Jordan was removed from the game at my local arcade. I remember because it was disappointing and Jordan was at the height of his popularity. If you didn't play the game when it literally first came out then you missed it. During the time, Barkley, Jordan, and Shaq were strict about the use of their likeness. For years, Jordan was removed from almost every video game and was just Player Number 23.
