For those who will follow in the coming years--if at all-- in editing this page, a few things need to be said.

1) The MCM has no relationship to The FRAP, a tenuous coalition between Marxist-Leninist citizens' committees, the CSN, FTQ, and students formed before the November elections in 1970. This coalition collapsed in the aftermath of the FLQ kidnappings and following October Crisis. The FRAP was also a workers' party for socialist liberation and revolution within Quebec. The MCM never had such aims.

2) The MCM in 1974 was a mixture of socialist, anarchist, and social democrats affiliated with the Parti Quebecios. The MCM in the early days did have some local labour organizations, but did not have official executive backing from the CSN or FTQ or was a creation from the labour unions; nor was the MCM at all connected to the aforementioned M-L community groups of the 1960s. By 1974, the 'Left' as it had been understood in the 1960s had devolved into finding the proper ideological lines between M-L, Maoist, and Marxist labour factions in relation to the national question. Further, the MCM decided early on to focus on 'consumption' issues--housing--rather than working class and labour issues.

3) The period between 1974 and 1978 was its socialist period. Nick auf der Maur, was not a founder, but an actual instigator in the demise of the MCM as a quasi-left party. The MCM in this period focused on connecting with the legacy residue of The FRAP in connecting with neighbourhood community groups associated with tenants' movements, but the party could not figure out whether it was a movement--thus more than simply an electoralist alliance--or a political party. As a result, this contradiction led to its undoing, especially in the municipal election in 1978. After 1978, the 'left' faction within the party was swept out of power internally.

4) 1978 to 1982 the party begins to become less and less interested in being an alternative to Drapeau.

5) From 1982 to 1986 the MCM begins to accept former Civic Party members. It might have been 'social democratic in slogans' but it wasn't in practice. The MCM during this period championed 'public consultation' to give a democratic facade to Drapeau economic policies.

6) Once in power the sole focus of the MCM from 1986 to 1993 was to produce a master plan for urban planning of the entire city of Montreal. By the time the plan was unveiled in 1992, there were no longer any mention to social housing. Instead the focus was on gentrification as the party had by the early 1990s become allies to local developers. The MCM ended its time in government explicitly as a Third Way political party, and this contradiction would lead to its unraveling as a political regime as the previous points made here represent political working class and community/neighbourhood factions that still exist today.
