Pitchfork quote[edit]

"Japanese-American"[edit]

Does Mitski explicitly identify as Japanese-American? I see Mitski#Personal_life says "half Japanese, half American but not fully either", which doesn't read clearly as Japanese-American to me. Thus I'm thinking it's a possible WP:BLP violation to say "Japanese-American" in WP voice without better sourcing. I'd be inclined to change to "American" in this article and in related articles where she is described (or even just remove the ethno-national identifier entirely) unless there are multiple reliable sources that say "Japanese-American". I've fixed it. Japanese birth is not relevant per WP:ETHNICITY. She was born in Japan, but her career origins are in the U.S. By her own words, in the sources provided in the personal life section, she would rather identify as just "American", and not "Asian American" or even "Japanese" Now she would just say she’s American ... She would not say she was Japanese ... She’s uncomfortable with “Japanese American,”[1]

She resides in America and for further context on her career being "American", when talking about the "industry" being "historically dominated" by "white men" in the cited Guardian interview, they are referring to America and not Japan. American racial labels and politics aren't relevant or the same in the latter country (for an example, just look at how Filipinos in Japan are considered a separate "race" from the Japanese, which is different from American labels).[2]

Just replying to notify @AleatoryPonderings that I've changed it to just American per the cited sources and reasons stated in my first reply. The context of her career have been in America and she only sees herself as "American". She does not feel comfortable describing herself as "Japanese", "Japanese American" or even "Asian American", though notes that those labels are applied to her because American society forces those labels onto her. Why does it say punk rock[edit]

Read the citations for it, some of her music has been audibly influenced by punk rock, most noticeably on Bury Me at Makeout Creek. The only one that doesn't fit for me (despite a citation) is folk punk, as it generally has its own sound rather than just being someone who plays songs that sound both folk and punk. Calling Mitski a composer[edit]

Since the term singer songwriter is kind of ambiguous, I added 'composer' in the intro.

Someone reverted this change.

So I'll start this discussion on whether or not it is appropriate.

To be clear, I changed it because I disagree that the term songwriter is ambiguous. The term clearly describes someone who specifically writes (or yes, composes) songs. A quote from the page for Song is: "A song is a musical composition performed by the human voice." My problem with putting composer is evidenced in this quote from the page for Songwriter: "A songwriter is a musician who professionally composes musical compositions or writes lyrics for songs, or both. The writer of the music for a song can be called a composer, although this term tends to be used mainly in the classical music genre and film scoring."
