Puberty 2[edit]

I think that Puberty 2 is a strong candidate for an independent article, given its wide reception across a number of major publications (The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, The Guardian). Where can I place a request for the creation of this article? --Alexsenauke (talk) 19:44, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pitchfork quote[edit]

The Pitchfork quote seems a bit long, but there isn't too much content in the "Career" section. I'm debating about trimming the quote down to express just one idea from the review. --Dbmikus (talk) 06:00, 23 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The quote summed up the album and its content very well IMO, maybe break it down into smaller pieces? Aleccat 22:06, 12 January 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aleccat (talkcontribs)

I deleted the quote because I thought it was way too long and took up most of her Career text. I am expanding her Wikipedia page in other ways. --Ljguterman (talk) 20:12, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Real Name[edit]

Mitski's real (birth) name is Mitsuki Frances Laycock. Why was this reverted, and as vandalism? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nihonfreak (talkcontribs) 19:51, 23 August 2018 (UTC) --Nihonfreak (talk) 19:53, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is the name her music is published under, so the assumption is it's her legal name, but is there anywhere else this info can be sourced to, i.e. an interview or article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SacraConversazione (talkcontribs) 19:49, 30 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Stalin?[edit]

What was the whole stalin mixup about? Cile112 (talk) 00:11, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Japanese-American"[edit]

Does Mitski explicitly identify as Japanese-American? I see Mitski#Personal_life says "half Japanese, half American but not fully either", which doesn't read clearly as Japanese-American to me. Thus I'm thinking it's a possible WP:BLP violation to say "Japanese-American" in WP voice without better sourcing. I'd be inclined to change to "American" in this article and in related articles where she is described (or even just remove the ethno-national identifier entirely) unless there are multiple reliable sources that say "Japanese-American". What do others think? AleatoryPonderings (talk) 05:57, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed it. Japanese birth is not relevant per WP:ETHNICITY. She was born in Japan, but her career origins are in the U.S. By her own words, in the sources provided in the personal life section, she would rather identify as just "American", and not "Asian American" or even "Japanese" Now she would just say she’s American ... She would not say she was Japanese ... She’s uncomfortable with “Japanese American,”[1]
She resides in America and for further context on her career being "American", when talking about the "industry" being "historically dominated" by "white men" in the cited Guardian interview, they are referring to America and not Japan. American racial labels and politics aren't relevant or the same in the latter country (for an example, just look at how Filipinos in Japan are considered a separate "race" from the Japanese, which is different from American labels).[2]
Again, aside from her birth and part of her childhood due to her parents work, her life, notability, residence and so on are "American". Clear Looking Glass (talk) 06:41, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just replying to notify @AleatoryPonderings that I've changed it to just American per the cited sources and reasons stated in my first reply. The context of her career have been in America and she only sees herself as "American". She does not feel comfortable describing herself as "Japanese", "Japanese American" or even "Asian American", though notes that those labels are applied to her because American society forces those labels onto her. Why does it say punk rock[edit]

This is a troll, right? To be fair I've only listened to her songs that went viral on social media, but they sound far from punk... I don't understand why she is labeled as such on this article. Hipotecas (talk) 17:23, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Read the citations for it, some of her music has been audibly influenced by punk rock, most noticeably on Bury Me at Makeout Creek. The only one that doesn't fit for me (despite a citation) is folk punk, as it generally has its own sound rather than just being someone who plays songs that sound both folk and punk. The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We[edit]

should the release year for the new album be changed? the date isnt known yet, plus single release dates really mean nothing, because working for the knife was released in 2021 but laurel hell wasn't released until 2022 Claireslobotomyemployee (talk) 22:18, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Calling Mitski a composer[edit]

Since the term singer songwriter is kind of ambiguous, I added 'composer' in the intro.

Someone reverted this change.

So I'll start this discussion on whether or not it is appropriate.

One point would be that she literally STUDIED composition. What, if not that, makes you a composer? Teegrube (talk) 23:55, 20 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

To be clear, I changed it because I disagree that the term songwriter is ambiguous. The term clearly describes someone who specifically writes (or yes, composes) songs. A quote from the page for Song is: "A song is a musical composition performed by the human voice." My problem with putting composer is evidenced in this quote from the page for Songwriter: "A songwriter is a musician who professionally composes musical compositions or writes lyrics for songs, or both. The writer of the music for a song can be called a composer, although this term tends to be used mainly in the classical music genre and film scoring." As far as I know Mitski only composes songs, she has not turned her skills to composing other forms of music. Lewishhh (talk) 14:53, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
