Infobox: Assumed Office?[edit]

Money tape[edit]

I'm having trouble writing a concise and coherent piece on this. The story outline seems to be:

  • a tape is broadcast showing Geoana taking (one or two?) bundle(s) of banknotes. The person giving the money is not seen on the video, only her (presumed) voice is heard, saying that the money is for an "eligible seat". (Geoana says nothing during the entire video.)
  • Geona reacts to the tape says it's a "campaign forgery".
  • Ana Birchall, who's the person allegedly giving the money, neither confirms nor denies being the one giving the money on the tape, but when pressed by journalists posts on her blog that she did make a campaign contribution. This is interpreted by Gandul newspaper, which if often critical of politicians of both left- and right-wing, as an "indirect confirmation" [1]. Evenimentul Zilei, normally unfavorable to Geoana and PSD, attributes the information that Birchall is the person giving the money to "blogs" [2], i.e. does not stand behind it. Ziua recounts the story of the tape as a fact, but also attributes the involvement of Birchall to the blogosphere. There's no shortage of more obscure newspapers like Ziarul de Iasi that state it for a fact that Birchall gave Geoana that money, but then most journalism in Romania is Fox News style (according to the US ambassador [3]).

The issues in first two bullets above are clear, but the 3rd is quite murky right now, at least in the mainstream press. I'd be nice if the Western press reported on it (like they eventually did with Basescu's tape), but with the elections over, I think the interest on Romania may have waned there. So, we'd probably have to settle for Romania-only sources. Based on what I've seen so far, I'd write:

Immediately after the end of the 2009 presidential elections, a video tape was broadcast depicting Geoana receiving (one or two?) bundle(s) of banknotes. The recording, on which Geoana is silent, is accompanied by a voice of an unseen person (female?) stating that the money is for an "eligible seat". Geoana immediately described the tape as a "campaign forgery". [Romanian blogoshpere then circulated the information that the persron giving the money was Ana Birchall, a fact that she neither confirmed nor denied, stating only that she made campaign contributions that were legally declared. She denied however being the "author" of the recording.]

Without any confirmation from a reliable source, this tape and Birchall's involvement are just speculations. Still I can only mention an article about a speech of President Băsescu from 2006, which may, or may not, be a coincidence. [[4]]Notasmile (talk) 14:30, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Deputy Secretary General of NATO[edit]
