"Assumed office" date[edit]

If the result wasn't out till next day, does he really count as having assumed office on 28 Feb as the infobox says? PamD 11:04, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I can see the merit in your argument. However if you look at other current MP infoboxes the date of the poll, not of the declaration, is given as the start of the term. That is the convention adopted by this site. It would seem undesirable to add a source of confusion, by trying to work out the date of each declaration. --Gary J (talk) 18:29, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Thornton (politician)Mike Thornton – Only subject called Mike, rather than Michael. Unreal7 (talk) 17:49, 24 June 2018 (UTC)--Relisting. © Tbhotch (en-2.5). 00:13, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support - don't see how this could be disputed. jamacfarlane (talk) 04:02, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose a common enough name and no longer MP. The new throws up golfers and American football players before this former backbencher. In ictu oculi (talk)
  • Oppose per In ictu oculi. In particular, my top Google results for "Mike Thornton" (in quotes) are mostly about Michael E. Thornton, who uses the name "Mike" professionally (e.g. his website http://mike-thornton.com). 59.149.124.29 (talk) 10:04, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support with hatnote "No longer MP" is just recentism. If "Mike Thornton" is the name Michael E. Thornton or other Michael Thorntons are better known by then arguably they should be moved as well / instead - but since nobody is suggesting that I don't see a reason for this article not to be moved. I recommend adding Template:About if the move goes ahead. WaggersTALK 10:57, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nomination. Sole subject of Wikipedia biographical entry who bears this exact name, thus obviating the need for the qualifier "(politician)". No convincing evidence has been presented that any of the other Michael Thorntons have been known to the public as "Mike".    Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 01:14, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Evidence has indeed been presented above that Michael E. is at least sometimes known as Mike, and furthermore WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT states: The fact that an article has a different title is not a factor in determining whether a topic is primary (emphasis mine). The fact that the politician is the only one who is more commonly called Mike than Michael (WP:COMMONNAME) does not imply anything about whether people who search for Mike are more likely to be looking for him or for someone else. Michael E. gets 15x as many page views as (politician) overall [1]; to put it another way, if only 7% of the people looking for Michael E. use "Mike" to search for him, that would mean page views for "Mike" are equally divided between the two even though "Mike" wouldn't be WP:COMMONNAME for Michael E. under that scenario. 59.149.124.29 (talk) 01:34, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Taking into consideration this argument, the two "Oppose" votes as well as the "Support with hatnote" vote by Waggers which includes the text, "If "Mike Thornton" is the name Michael E. Thornton or other Michael Thorntons are better known by then arguably they should be moved as well / instead", I am submitting the RM Michael E. ThorntonMike Thornton (Medal of Honor) at Talk:Michael E. Thornton#Requested move 27 June 2018 which, if successful, will make this RM a moot point.    Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 22:47, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Thornton (politician)Mike Thornton – I did this before, but I genuinely believe the argument is enough. See Mike Posner as another example. Unreal7 (talk) 20:18, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose plenty of Mike Thorntons worldwide. In ictu oculi (talk) 09:14, 21 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. The move would just cause confusion and risk creation of bad links. Narky Blert (talk) 12:59, 22 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
