Claims of misidentification[edit]

Note that this request was posted earlier today. Whereas it is clearly not a reason to replace one bio with the other one, the claims that the attribution has been mixed may be valid, and if there is an expert around, it would be good to look at the article in more detail.--Ymblanter (talk) 15:31, 12 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This [1] and this wikia page [2] have screenshots of one of the roles involved ("Lockwood" in Auton (film series)), claimed by the IP editor to him, the British M. W. This page [3] has a photograph claimed to be the Canadian M. W., said to have played in Secret Nation, Finding Mary March and The Boys of St. Vincent. Doesn't look like the same person to me. I just want to assure you, for the record, that nobody here deliberately conflated you with him in an attempt to purposely misrepresent either of you — IMDb erroneously merged the two of you, so people here simply perpetuated the same error out of a good faith but obviously flawed assumption that their information was correct.

But if an article about you is the goal, hijacking the existing article about the other one isn't the appropriate way to go about that. For the time being, this article has been corrected so that your roles aren't being mixed in with his. If adequate reliable source coverage about you is available to support it, then a new article can be created about you at Michael Wade (British actor) — and then we can move this one to Michael Wade (Canadian actor), and turn the plain title into a disambiguation page which will list you, him and the other two people who are already hatnoted at the top of this page. We do have ways to fix these things when they happen, I assure you.

And it's worth noting that IMDb also has processes in place to correct people's profiles when they contain erroneous information. I've submitted corrections and updates myself several times when I've caught errors, and I'm not even a film industry professional. Update: the Canadian Michael Wade has a secondary profile at "Michael Wade (V)" which lists only his The Boys of St. Vincent credit. So what I'm going to do is submit corrections to have any information about the Canadian one transferred to that profile, so that "Michael Wade (I)" just lists yours instead. I've submitted all of the necessary corrections to IMDb, as far as I know; all of the Canadian actor's credits and biographical details have been submitted for deletion from "Michael Wade (I)" and addition to "Michael Wade (V)". It usually takes them a couple of days to actually get everything processed, so it won't appear corrected right away, but I'll keep an eye on it over the week in case there are any problems or delays. Michael Wade. Conflation of two actors, one canadian, one British.[edit]

Hello again. Thanks for your email. I am the English actor Michael Wade, which is my real name, with no middle names, born in Brighton, England in 1946. My claims can be confirmed by watching my showreel on www.vimeo.com/michaelwade or www.vimeo.com/106951476

The first clip on the showreel is from Hector Babenco's 2007 film 'El Pasado'. I am the English speaking actor sitting to the left of Gael Garcia Bernal.

In the second clip I am Dr Brandreth in the 1997 series 'A Dance to the Music of Time'. This can be further verified by looking at the IMDb full cast list.

In the third and fourth clips I am Lord Clifford, playing opposite Simon Callow as King Charles ll, in the 1995 film 'England My England'. In the cast list I am named as Michael John Wade. The middle name 'John' was forced on me by British Actors' Equity (to avoid mistaking me for a singer named Mike Wade!) but I rarely used it. Equity still have me registered as Michael John Wade.

The fifth clip is another scene from 'A Dance to the Music of Time'.

The sixth clip is from a drama/documentary, the name of which I don't recall.

The seventh clip is a scene from the 1993 TV series 'Brighton Belles' in which I play Mark, with Wendy Craig and Sheila Gish.

The eighth clip is from the 'Auton' Trilogy, and my first line in it is, "My name is Lockwood...."!!! It was the leading role, but it has been cited in the Canadian Michael Wade's Wikipedia and IMDb credits as his major claim to fame!

In the ninth clip I am Dai Bread in 'Under Milk Wood', also called 'An Evening with Dylan Thomas', a 1992 Air Studios/George Martin production directed by and starring Anthony Hopkins, who appears in the clip with me.

In the tenth clip, a commercial, I appear with Nicholas Briggs, who, incidentally, directed 'Auton'.

If you google 'Jo Soares Michael Wade', you will see me being interviewed in Portuguese by the great Brazilian chat show host Jo Soares in November 2012. In the interview some of my clips are shown, including a couple of seconds of me in the 1966 film 'A Man For All Seasons'.

If I can be of any further help in de-conflating the two CVs please let me know.

In an effort to avoid further confusion, as I have already stated, my real and professional name is Michael Wade, with NO middle names. However, three days ago, on December the 12th, when I tried to sign in to Wikipedia for the first time ever to complain about this matter, I was not permitted to proceed under my real name, or under Mike Wade, because these names are already taken by others. I therefore decided to use my mother's rather unusual maiden name Collenette as a middle name - and it worked! I stress again that it is NOT my real name. And just to repeat, all my claims are easily verifiable by viewing my showreel at: www.vimeo.com/michaelwade

Lastly, also to avoid further confusion over the name Michael John Wade, and as previously stated, the third and fourth clips on my showreel are scenes from 'England My England'. On the IMDb cast list I am named as Michael John Wade. This name was forced on me by British Actors' Equity, but I rarely used it, although Equity still has me listed under that name.

Please forgive any repetition, but I am not good with computers, and the fact that I have managed to get this far is a minor miracle!

I have just looked up the Canadian Michael Wade's Wikipedia page and you have altered it significantly and all my credits have been removed. Thank you very much for that. Just to clarify, there's no committee at Wikipedia that makes advance decisions about who is or isn't eligible for a Wikipedia article — technically speaking, absolutely anybody in the world is allowed to at least try to start an article about any topic at all. Whether that article will be kept, once it's here, is a matter of whether it satisfies our inclusion standards for actors and our rules about the use of reliable sourcing — but there's no process on here by which anybody's eligibility or lack thereof for a Wikipedia article gets decided upon in advance of an individual editor at least trying to create one.

As a Canadian, I have deep database access to older Canadian newspaper coverage, which is why I was able to repair the sourcing on the Canadian actor, but I don't have anything even approaching the same level of access to British newspaper coverage — for Canadian topics, I can source all the way back to the 1800s if they got coverage in The Globe (and Mail), the Toronto Star, the Winnipeg Tribune or the Ottawa Journal, and the 1980s if they got coverage in any of Canada's other major market daily papers besides those, but for British topics I'm strictly at the mercy of the Google. So I'm unfortunately just not in a position to personally evaluate whether the necessary type and depth of coverage exists to support an article about you or not — somebody with access to British media coverage databases would have to make that call. But we don't have any "decision" process about a person's eligibility for an article outside of somebody actually putting in that research time — so I honestly can't give you either a "yes" or "no" answer to that question right now, because I just don't have the resources necessary to make that determination. Dear Bearcat, I have just read your kind reply explaining how it all works. And of course I never meant to imply that any of this confusion was deliberate, neither did I set out to hijack the existing article. As I have already said, I'm pretty hopeless with computers, so much so that I've been aware of this conflation for some years and never realised there was anything that could be done about it, much less how to go about it! And I was completely in the dark about how and why people have pages on Wikipedia. It was only when a friend recently asked me why I was not listed and reminded me of the conflation that I decided it was time to give it a try.

I have read the Canadian Michael Wade's revised Wikipedia page with my credits taken out and additional information put in. I'm sure his family will be happier with it. The fact that in the original page it stated that he was best known for a credit that is mine is one of the reasons why my friend asked why I was not listed.

I am now in regular touch with Champion at IMDb and he is making great progress, with your help I suspect, which you have noted, and the two of us will now have separate pages.

– The Canadian actor is not significantly more notable than anybody else listed on the disambiguation page, and thus does not have a particularly strong claim to primary topic rights over this name — the only real reason he has the plain title is that his article got created earlier than the others did. Accordingly, he should be at a disambiguated title and the dab page should be at the plain title, not vice versa. Bearcat (talk) 19:38, 4 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Note that per past discussion on this talk page, there may also be a future need to move this again to Michael Wade (Canadian actor), if and when a valid and properly sourced article can be created about Michael Wade (British actor). But we don't preemptively disambiguate titles just because an article might someday be creatable about another topic; we can revisit this if and when the British actor does have an article to disambiguate.
