[Proposed changes to the article][edit]

These proposals are based on the guidance given in Wikipedia:WikiProject_Composers.

Expand lead section to include brief information on the composer's stylistic location in relation to his contemporaries and in historical terms. Add a sentence to the lead section to say 'As a non-party political member of the House of Lords, he speaks as an advocate for the arts, contemporary music and music education'.

Change section heading 'Compositions' to 'Notable compositions'. Group compositions by genre, with genre subheadings. Mention further notable compositions:

  • Meditations for String Orchestra (Guinness Prize for composition in 1977)
  • Gregorian Variations (1982)
  • Add reference to the Channel 4 film that 'Or Shall We Die' was made into
  • Songs of Awakening Love (performed at 1988 Proms)
  • Concerto for Organ (performed at 2011 Proms)
  • The Garden of Earthly Delights
  • Concerto for Orchestra (performed at 2005 Proms)
  • Tetractys - the Art of Fugue (Royal Ballet production, 2014)
  • Violin Concerto (performed at 2016 Proms)
  • This Endernight (King's College Christmas carol commission)
