Reversion of edit to metabolism section[edit]
@Graham Beards I would love some clarification on how I can revise the section on metabolism that I recently published but you then quickly removed. I saw that you mentioned an issue with citations, but I'm unsure what exactly the problem was or how I can fix it. Regarding the number of citations, I feel that they are all provide unique and relevant information, so I would like to keep them if possible. Also, I am part of the Wiki Education project for this page, so I'm overall new to Wikipedia. Njkleb (talk) 07:48, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, first take a look at the version you edited here: [1] and scroll down to the citations. The errors are in red. Second, we don't need a citation for all those pathways (glycolysis etc). - I see those errors on the version that you linked, but when I drafted that section in the sandbox, there weren't any errors. Also to clarify, the citations are specifically for papers that investigate these pathways within M. maripaludis, not just general information about the pathways. If you still believe that those citations should be excluded, I would be willing to consider your reasoning, but my overall goal for this section was to provide context for the basic functions included in each category of metabolism specifically for this species, along with sources that dive deeper into the pathways to achieve these metabolic processes. Likewise, if you feel that the short descriptions that I added for each category are redundant, considering most of that information can be found by clicking on the links, then I can understand that reasoning as well. At the same time, I do think that it would be valuable to include these various citations somewhere in the article, in case people do want to learn more about a specific metabolic function within this species.
- Also regarding the bold type, I totally understand why bolding may not have been appropriate in this context, but do you have another suggestion for how I could format this section to be visually digestible? Maybe just having the dashes between each "metabolic category" and the brief description is fine. And likewise, if you think that these descriptions should be removed entirely, then this isn't a concern. Njkleb (talk) 22:32, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for engaging on the Talk Page. My main concern is the list should be supported by that first citation in the section (otherwise the opening statement is not supported). So the other citations are citation overkill and are redundant. Some of them are also rather old in any case. I have restored most of them while we have this discussion. Citations are used primarily for verification, not for further information. If there are errors of omission, these should be added to the article rather than directing readers elsewhere. With regard to summarising the linked topics, while redundant, I have no strong views if you think these are are an improvement. Graham Beards (talk) 07:36, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, that makes sense. Looking back at the actual substance of what I had written, I agree that most of it was just general information that could be found by reading the Wikipedia article linked to that bullet point. And I also think that the format of the current version (without those descriptions) is a lot easier for a reader to digest.
- But now that you've clarified that "citations are used primarily for verification, not for further information," I totally agree that I had listed too many sources, because like you mentioned, the June 2016 metabolism paper provided sufficient context for each of those 8 categories.
- I'm happy with the current version of this section, and I appreciate your help and patience. I believe that we will be adding a few more sections to the article and revising the lead paragraph to make it flow a bit better, but our contributions to this article should be finalized by the end of the week! - Those citation errors didn't show up in your sandbox because there were no named citation conflicts (ie different citations by with the same ref name). These only show up in the article. This has caught me out in the past. We can leave the redundant citations in for the time time being in case other editors want to join this discussion.
