DOB/death???[edit]

There is a doubt about both Maximus' date of birth and that of his death, cf. Biographisch-Bibliographisches Kirchenlexikon (BBKL) which states that he was born in the middle of the 4th century and that he died between 408 and 423, according to "De viris illustribus" (Genadius, late 5th century). I am no expert on him, so I will leave the reconciliation of these two opposing statements to somebody more knowledgeable than me. Regards, 82.207.195.193 (talk) 08:58, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maximus is supposed to have been present at a Council at Rome in 465 (Thurston & Attwater: Butler's Lives of the Saints (1956) and Michael Ott in the old Catholic Encyclopedia). If this is correct (and I think it must be) the death-dates given are far too early.

Thats because there are two Maximus's, the first who died between 408-423 and the second who was present at the councils of Milan in 451 and, as you noted, Rome in 465. There has been an article on the issue recently, see Clemens Weidmann, "Maximus of Turin. Two Preachers of the Fifth Century," in: Preaching in the Patristic era (Brill, 2018).
