Phonominal Memory

"In 1978 I met Marvin for the first time. I was the helicopter pilot flying with Irvin "Irv" Tailluer Geoglogist with the USGS. I had flown Irv around for a couple of years and that day he told me that we were going to fly an old friend of his and him into The Brooks Range. They were, of course, still looking for more oil.

At one point in the flight, Marvin asked Irv if he could take us back to a site he's been to once. Irv asked him why and Marvin told him he had left a rock sample, hat, and rock hammer there and wanted to go back and get it. he said he mostly wanted to get his hammer. I asked him when he left it, he said, 1954. I laughed and then we flew for twenty more minutes then he told me to land over there.

I did. He got out went down around a corner and came back with his sample, his hat (what was left) and his rock hammer (slightly rusted). And a big satisfied grin on his face. It stands out as one of my fondest memories of my time in Alaska. I loved his art."
