Mooted merger with United Kingdom general election, 2005[edit]

No. There may be (or may have been already, for all I know) by-elections resulting in small majorities. If so, the specific reference to the 2005 general election will have to be amended. This page should be current; not linked to a specific general election. Grant 11:33, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. The general election page is already quite long, not in KB, but certainly in screenfuls. Analysis of marginal seats seems like a convenient item to split out, and if it hadn't already been split out I would have been inclined to suggest doing so. However, the article could do with some expansion and discussion of issues such the effect of boundary changes etc on future elections, and it could usefully be expanded to cover previous elections. Ideally, there would be a "Marginals" article for each general election, and a general article discussing the concept and analysing trends: a lot of work, of course, and I'm not offering to do it, but merger into the 2005 article would be a step in the wrong direction. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 07:43, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. In its present form, if anything this page should be moved to List of marginal constituencies in the United Kingdom. As BrownHairedGirl points out, an article could potentially be made on this topic, discussing marginals past and present, and it wouldn't make sense for such an article to be merged with the article about a particular election. It might be interesting to have lists such as this for each election though, with "List of [...]" titles. --RFBailey 12:17, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Something must be done[edit]

The election is less than two weeks away, so a decision needs to be made soon about what should be done with this page. I agree with BrownHairedGirl that the ideal solution would be a marginals article for each election. The contents of this article should be moved to a specific page for post 2005 marginals, a similar article should be created for the marginals post election 2010. I think that perhaps this article should focus on those constituencies that have been notable during specific elections or remained as marginal through multiple elections. Also, this list appears incomplete. Only those seats held by Labour appear to be listed.

Name issue and general question if article is needed.[edit]

I think the name "Marginal constituencies in the 2005 United Kingdom general election" is a bit confusing as this refers to the constituencies which were marginal after the election rather than before it (which to me is what the name would suggest). I wonder if "Marginal constituencies following the 2005 United Kingdom general election" would be a better title for this article. As an aside, I have to say also wonder if this real needs to be an article on its own, especially as the constituency and boundary changes for the 2010 United Kingdom general election meant that outside of Scotland (where in the end no seats changed hands in 2010) the marginality of these seats ended up being of little relevance.
