Boston POV

The "Manny Being Manny" section of this article is downright awful, and it's clearly been written from the perspective of a Boston Red Sox fan. Labelling incidents as "the final straw" and saying things like "led Red Sox nation to demand the deportation of number 24" is ridiculously POV and should be deleted or edited. Wait, Are you saying that even though I'm a member of Red Sox Nation I still have to pay taxes to the U.S. Government. That just doesn't seem right. Seriously though I'm not a fan of that section. • April 4, 1994 The Original Incident - In the first game of his rookie season, Manny hit a two-run ground-rule double in the 8th inning to tie the game. He initially thought he hit a home run, and continued to round the bases, until the third base umpire stopped him. The announcers commented on how he was a tremendous young hitter, but seemed to have a short attention span: Manny was then almost immediately picked off at second base by the catcher. Later, after drawing a walk in the 10th inning, he was replaced with a pinch runner.
• July 1, 1997 - Manny was playing right field in his first game in the Astrodome. Tim Bogar of the Astros hit a bouncer down the first base line. The ball came to a rest under the bullpen bench and Manny signalled to the umpire. Manny was unaware of the ground rules which stated that the bench was in play. Manny continued to signal to the umpire while Bogar got an easy inside-the-park home run.
• December 10, 2001 - Ramirez, in his first season with Boston, claimed he was uncomfortable, prompting the new ownership group to create a separate interview room, to ease Manny's transition with the Red Sox.
• May 18, 2002 - Ramirez lost his diamond earring sliding into third base during a rehab start with the Pawtucket Red Sox. After the game, 13 PawSox players and the Syracuse grounds crew combed the third base area and found the stud, but not the diamond that was worth a reported $15,000.
• September 7, 2002 - Ramirez requested the song "Good Times" by Styles P for his plate appearances. The unedited song's lyrics about marijuana use were played over the Fenway Park public address system.
• August 29, 2003 - Manny expressed in an ESPN interview that he would like to play for the New York Yankees, the arch-rivals of his current team, the Boston Red Sox.
• August 30, 2003 - Manny missed several games with pharyngitis amid media speculation that he was well enough to play. • July 31, 2005 - After heavy speculation that he would force a trade, Manny entered the game versus the Minnesota Twins as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 8th inning, to a standing ovation 54 minutes after the 4:00 trading deadline had passed (he had been booed his two previous games). Ramirez proceeded to chop an RBI single up the middle off Juan Rincón that would prove to be the game-winning hit. After the game, Ramirez was quoted as saying, "Forget about the trade, man. This is the place I want to be, man. It's great, man. They love me here, man. This is the place to be. 'Manny being Manny,' he's great, man... we've been through a lot, this is the place for me, I'm just happy to be here... I'm back!"
• August 24, 2005 - Ramirez, up with one out and the bases loaded, hit a ground ball but did not run down the first base line, resulting in an inning-ending double play. The Kansas City Royals rallied to tie the game, and eventually won in extra innings.
• March 20, 2007 - When he was supposed to be at spring training, Ramirez appeared in an eBay listing selling a barbecue grill. The listing was later cancelled by eBay. He later posted a custom 2006 Chrysler 300C SRT8 on eBay.
• October 17, 2007 - With the Red Sox trailing Cleveland 3-1 in the ALCS, Ramirez told reporters that if the Red Sox were eliminated, it wouldn't be "the end of the world," igniting Red Sox team members towards a "come from behind" ALCS victory. Though Ramirez faced criticism in the media for his statement, his team would go on to win their next 7 games to win the ALCS and World Series.
• October 18, 2007 - In game five of the ALCS at Jacobs Field, Ramirez hit a fly ball to deep center field that bounced off the top of the outfield wall and back into play. Ramirez, assuming he had hit a home run, casually strolled to first base and was forced to settle for a single instead of an easy double after it was ruled that the ball had never left the field.
• October 27, 2007 - In game three of the World Series, Ramirez was thrown out in a close play at home plate. Manny often flips his helmet off while he is running the bases, to help pick up speed. In this instance, replays show that Manny's helmet bounced off of his heel, causing him to stutter-step as he rounded third base.
• May 14, 2008 - At Baltimore, Manny caught a Kevin Millar fly ball to deep-left, ran up the wall, high-fived a Red Sox fan in the stands, and turned around and fired the ball back to the infield for a double play.
• July 6, 2008 The Last Straw - Manny was called in to pinch-hit, in the top of the ninth inning of a tied game at Yankee Stadium. Mariano Rivera threw three consecutive fastballs past Manny, without so much as a swing. "I was kind of surprised, definitely, that he never took the bat off his shoulder," Rivera said. "I don't know what he was thinking. That's Manny." Manny asked to be left off the starting lineup for the important Yankee series, citing knee pains. Upon completion of the series, Red Sox management ordered MRIs for both of Manny's knees, in hopes of eliciting some truth from a tense situation. The MRIs came back clean. The latest episode became one of the most incendiary moments to fuel the unrest of Fenway's faithful. This became arguably the last straw that led Red Sox nation to demand the deportation of number 24.
• July 9, 2008 - During the 6th inning of a home game against the Twins, Manny climbed into the Green Monster and was seen talking on a cell phone during a pitching change.
• July 15, 2008 - Manny drew the wrath of Red Sox owner John Henry for comments made to the Boston Herald, where he hinted that team management had not been up front with him in regards to upcoming contract negotiations. Henry responded angrily the following day, saying Manny was a critical part of the Sox's 2004 and 2007 world championships and that the team always kept Manny in the loop.
• July 18, 2008 - In the bottom of the 6th inning, in a game against the Angels, Manny tried to chase down a fly ball in front of him in left field hit by Maicer Izturis. He went into a slide to catch the ball, but missed it so it dropped and rolled behind him. He scampered on all fours to get the ball, and ended up rolling on top of the ball when he reached it making center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury unable to pick up the ball. Manny had to lift up his rear to get the ball off the ground. When he finally picked up the ball and threw it into the infield with a big smile on his face, Izturis was on third base instead of the likely single had Manny just fielded the ball instead of trying to catch it on the fly. Theo Epstein and Terry Francona were both visibly unhappy with the whimsical fielding.
• July 27, 2008 - Before his game against the New York Yankees, Manny stated that he would play in Iraq if he needed to play there.
• July 30, 2008 - Before the third game of a series against the Angels, Manny held a handwritten sign stating "I'm going to Green Bay for Brett Favre straight up." The Green Bay Packers quarterback was in the throes of a similarly untenable dispute with management. Ramirez reiterated this proposal in an interview with ESPN Deportes that aired the same day.
• August 11, 2008 - In what could be characterized as the first "Manny being Manny" incident with the Dodgers, when his teammates took to the field at the top of the ninth inning against Philadelphia at Dodger Stadium, Manny did not appear and nobody knew where he was. After several minutes of searching for him he finally jogged onto the field with the front of his uniform unbuttoned. He said he needed to use the restroom. He returned with a red glove instead of a black glove he used the innings before.

HCG and other things

I'm not a big fan of the current way the wiki deals with this. His suspension and basic information, which can be distilled into a sentence or two, should be found in the intro. Further, the information given here is shoddy. Manny was busted for having actually used steroids AND using HCG. They knew he was using steroids because of the his hormone ratios. So his suspension is not exlusively about HCG. That's just the one they have a paper trial to. Anyway, the intro should cover this latest controversy.66.190.29.150 (talk) 22:26, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

It should not be included in the intro at this point because so much of the information is speculative right now. The article handles the info correctly with factual information. He was not "busted" for steroids. He was suspended because he had used a banned substance, HCG. You obviously don't know the issues involed here. Ramirez's positive test came this season. It was of concern because his ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone, another naturally occurring hormone, exceeded 4 to 1, a source familiar with the case told The Chronicle. I am really surprised that they didn't bother including why these drugs are actually given to individuals. The way it acts on adipose tissue alone is very interesting, and without the release of the medical records there is no way of knowing for sure what was going on. I am not suggesting that he was taking these for adipose tissue disorders, though that is my sub specialty. My point is that without the release of those medical records I think the wiki should not go about just assuming they know something. As far as I know a wiki is for documenting information, not assuming things. Aside from those issues I would say that a typical male of his age suffering from premature lowering of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone. I am not suggesting anyone has that, merely stating that if it was the case it would explain why a physician would prescribe this. It would also explain why he went to a private physician instead of one provided by the team. Again I am not saying any of that is true, and without medical reports and tests none of us will ever know. Beside many primarily(all?) stylistic changes, I have split one sentence in the lead, in order separately to attribute the link between hCG and steroid cycling to dealer Victor Conte; and to the LAtimes article (ref name="Suspended"). I didn't find the link to steroids in the NYtimes article previously cited alone in the lead. As I write the crucial references are numbers 4, 5, 35.

The page should be updated from the vague 'he also was scheduled to play a few games in the minors prior to rejoining the active roster' to the more accurate 'Manny played two games at AAA Albuquerque and is scheduled to play four games with Class A Lake Elsinore before rejoining the Dodgers.

• Move, most English sources do not include the accent even if it should be there. And many people do not use accent marks even in Latin America, but that is because ignorance. Allowing is not the same as asking for. Without the accent mark, it sounds differently (OK, that does not happen in English, but that is because you don't know how or why). He is a Latin American person. If he was back in his country, he should use the accent mark, and if he does not, he would be commiting a misspelling. Spanish is a regulated language, unless English, that's why you are not used to these reasons. I work in newsrooms and I would be surprised if I found many NYT reporters who can explain me why this surname changes pronunciation without the accent mark. That isn't really relevant per WP:OFFICIALNAMES. (I won't even go into the fact that there is no evidence or citation of his "birth registration" given here.) Ramirez is known almost exclusively for actions in the US and his name is used there without an accent. Bill Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe III and is legally William Jefferson Clinton but the article is not at either of those titles per WP:UCN. —  AjaxSmack  03:07, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Intro

I find it very sad that he was one of the greatest hitters ever and the majority of his intro is about PEDs. There is way too much information about the PEDs in the intro, the majority of which can be shifted down to the actual section of the article that talks about that. Sounds more like a slanderous hate article then an "encyclopedic" supposedly non-biased article. That being said, I have my doubts that anything will change. In the 2009 controlled substance scandal, You should insert the names of the identified doctors that contriobuted to the situation (Dr. Pedro Bosch and his son Anthony P Bosch). Both were identifed by ESPN, YAHOO and every other major news source. Both are again currently under investigation for providing PEDs to Alex Rodriguez, Melky Caberrera and Paul Braun, and MLB stars.

Well I did a quick glance though it and I see major problems with the article.... it needs some massive expansion, hardly anything written about him on his Cleveland days, eight seasons into barely three paragraphs!! Playoff heroics and World Series into one paragraph!!! very statsy, nothing on his playing style or his popularity with fans outside a two sentence "personality" section, multiple dead links, and so forth. This is going to be a fail unless you want me to go though how to proceed with this article for a chance to pass GA in the future. Secret ^account 03:12, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

So I think the Personality section would be good if it focused primarily on "Manny being Manny", which it is intended to. However, I'm stuck on what to include, so if any baseball editor could help me out, that would be great. No strong opinion, but I'd favor keeping that type of material under the Personal life section, as I think that WP:CRITS is a consideration. Much of the current personal life stuff is redundant to the early life info. EricEnfermero (Talk) 03:54, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

EricEnfermero I agree. I think the Personal Life and Personality sections should be merged. My biggest issue was the "Manny being Manny" moments. There are so many of them, but I'm just not sure which moments to include (i.e I'm not sure which moments would be considered notable and which ones wouldn't). • In the GA Toolbox, Dablinks shows no problems, but Checklinks highlights several URLs that are dead or that may have changed.  Done
• There are lots of images, but there are no copyright status issues or caption problems that I detect.  Done
• I noticed at least one issue with close paraphrasing - the third sentence of the Early Life section.  Done
• I checked the rest of the Jockbio citations and found another issue: The part about the 1994 season makes it sound like Cleveland's season ended prematurely, but there was a strike that year. May need to add another source to explain that.  Done
• In glancing through the article as a whole, I notice that there is inconsistent application of MOS:ACRO. In particular, the entry goes back and forth between American League and AL. AL is fine by itself after the first use of the full term.  Done
