Hoax?[edit]

Who would give a project deliberately the acronym MISS? Why not "First American In Low Orbit 'Round Earth" a.k.a. FAILORE? -- Matthead ^discuß! O 08:13, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MISS Program Appointees[edit]

Further research on the Spacefacts and Astronautix websites confirm that William B.Bridgeman was on the 1957 list for MISS astronaut sellectees. He was a Navy pilot in WW II and worked foe Douglass Aircraft in the 50's as a test pilot. He at one time held the altitude and speed records in 1951 and appeared on the cover of Life magizine as the "Fastest Man Alive." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.172.121.54 (talk) 19:51, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bridgeman no longer appears on the list; someone (TopGUN71691) replaced him with Forrest S. Petersen (mis-spelled as Peterson!) Petersen was an X-15 pilot, but was US Navy, and thus not a likely candidate for a USAF program. He also doesn't appear in either of the two external references. Gallery[edit]

I'm lovin' that picture of Alvin S. White. Seriously, if you don't have pictures of everyone, don't make it an image gallery! How about a table? Then you could have pictures of some people, but not all. Serious quality issues[edit]

This article stinks to high heaven, but I'm going to hold my nose and dig in. Issues:

This is really nothing more than a list of the candidates; there is practically no information on the program itself.
A sad attempt to make up for the above is made by padding it with a picture gallery and biographical information. This should all be unnecessary here, as it is (should be) all available in the individual pilots' articles.
No citations (to be fair, there's probably not much out there beyond the two external references, but these should be in citation form.)
A circular citation reference to a wikilink (Wikipedia can't cite itself!)
An apparent factual error: William Bridgeman is missing, and Forrest S. Petersen (also mis-spelled as "Peterson") appears in his place (see above).
I can't see any RW verification that there were two separate selections in 1957 and 1958; Astronautix cites a single "June 25, 1958 US Air Force briefing" including all 9 names. I also don't see a reference to 1957 in the "First Up?" article.

This article should look more like NASA Astronaut Group 2, which is a good model. Rolling up my sleeves... JustinTime55 (talk) 20:18, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Titan?[edit]
