Malapascua history[edit]

I removed the history info because it has been tagged with "citation needed" for some time. The paragraph removed is:

The name "Malapascua" is said to have been given by some Spaniards whose ship happened to get stranded in the island on Christmas Day, 1520, due to bad weather. Because of their misfortune of having to spend Christmas away from their comrades and family stuck in a desolate island, the Spaniards called the island Mala Pascua, which literally means "Bad Easter". From then on the Spaniards and non-locals would refer to the island as Malapascua, while the local residents insist that their place is called Logon.

It is also confusing, does Malapascua really mean "Bad Easter"? It is true that Pascua means Easter in Spanish, but the word for Christmas in the Philippines is very close (pasko, from Pascua de Navidad [1]). I tried to find an authoritative source on the history and etymology, but every Google search is either a travel site, blog, or mirror/copy of WP. It looks to me that this passage is nothing more than folklore that is repeated on numerous websites. So, without a reliable and authoritative source, it is better to remove this (you can't even add it as folklore, because I couldn't find sources identifying this as folklore). If anyone does find proper sources, feel free to reinstate the paragraph. -- P 1 9 9   15:29, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pascuas is also Spanish for Christmas - "Felices Pascuas" means "Happy Christmas".
There are cod etymologies all over these 'pino location pages, usually based on alleged misunderstandings between locals going about their daily life, and Spanish soldiers asking them what they're doing. None is verifiable, and probably not remotely true. They should all be deleted. 109.157.74.250 (talk) 01:23, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
