Dubious figures in "reliable" sources?[edit]

  • India Today says "Rs 295 crore gross in seven days" which even higher than producers own claim of 233 crore given below.
  • Times of India says Rs 200 crore in weekend and Rs 295 crore in week. This a wild figure as other sources cited in the same article give Rs 100 crore in weekend.[1][2][3][4]
  • Zee Biz claims
On Friday, a report said the film has touched the Rs 295 crores gross worldwide in one week.
A report by Times of India said that the film raked in over Rs 200 crore in its first week.
If reports are to be believed, Maharshi is nearing the Rs 85-crore mark.

Three figures which are miles are apart are given in the same article. Which one do we have to pick?

I have removed all the these sources. Given the hype around the film, rumours, fake reports and random twitter fan estimates; initial reports, even from traditionally reliable sources have to be taken with a pinch of salt.

My 2 paise on this: For final gross, its better to look for figures published several months after the release. If initial figures vary from final ones by a wide margin like in this case, its prudent to simply disregard them as unreliable. Thanks. -- Ab207 (talk) 07:18, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ab207, Now I found two sources that were published 40 days after the film was released, [1], [2]. This sources in particular says that the film collected 185-195 cr in close to around 6 weeks after the film was released. SP013 (talk) 15:55, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Good research SP013! Hans India seems to have lifted the figures straight from Telugu filmnagar (published a day before); I'm somewhat skeptical about Sakshi Post, as Sakshi newspaper gave a different estimate. What you do you think? --Ab207 (talk) 16:52, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ab207, Can you add the Sakshi telugu link to this since both Sakshi Post and Sakshi newspaper are the same except one of them is written in English while the other one is written in Telugu. SP013 (talk) 16:56, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@SP013: I've already added Sakshi Telugu source which says 145 cr. While Sakhi post is the English version of their website but I'm not if their content is same,. The articles seem to be entirely different from Sakshi Telugu. --Ab207 (talk) 17:03, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ab207, Do you suppose that we can do an average by adding up all the sources and giving an estimated collection by that way or can we do a range from 145-195 cr. SP013 (talk) 17:05, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@SP013: I think giving in a range is better but we have to make sure all the sources are reliable. In this case, I'm don't we can rely on Hans India, see this Hans source, it says final WW share is 101.61 cr (which is less than 40 day WW share 109.3 cr!). So its better to disregard that Hans India source. I already removed IBT because I suspect they lifted it from ABO, same can be said for Hans who most probably took the figures from Telugu filmnagar. -- Ab207 (talk) 17:14, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Can we consider the production house collections?[5] PK743 (talk) 05:18, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PK743: No, producers have conflict of interest to inflate the collections. Cyphoidbomb (mentioning so that they can confirm this) asked not to prefer them. Now infobox has started to become clumsy, both budget and gross are varying by a wide margin even after discarding bogus articles, we might have to consider moving them to "see production/box office." -- Ab207 (talk) 09:50, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ab207: Thank you. Yeah i support moving them to "see production/box office." There are two more articles which stats it was produced on a budget of 70 crore.[6][7] PK743 (talk) 10:32, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PK743 good findings, we may have to some of filter these, as we cannot possibly show all of them. Ab207 (talk) 11:23, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As a general practise, it's better to avoid producer claims. For instance, I've never seen a reliable Mohanlal or Mammootty gross that didn't come from their production house. That doesn't mean that they always fib, and sometimes it might be wise to consider their response when looking at other high figures. Remember that you can always present the gross in the form of a range, and sometimes you have to consider other factors, like when shitty journalists included pre-release rights sales figures into the Kabali "box office" figures, which is just willful ignorance. While Wikipedia shouldn't be the arbiters of truth, sometimes common sense has to be applied and should prevail over questionable figures. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:33, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the input. While its not uncommon for Indian films to varying financials, this one seems to be one of those extreme cases. --Ab207 (talk) 07:05, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
