Legal name[edit]

Nationality[edit]

There is some dispute as to what his nationality is - editors are changing it between Japanese and American. As a child of Japanese parents born in the US he held, and legally could hold as a minor, both American and Japanese nationality. Japan does not permit dual nationality for adults. Two years after becoming an adult, Japan by Japanese nationality law would revoke his Japanese nationality if he didn't prove or assert under oath to Japanese authorities that he renounced his American nationality, basically by filling out the required forms at an American consulate. Nothing sourced in the article gives any details of what he did and which one of his two birth nationalities he chose to retain. It is assumed that as he lives and works in Japan and has done all his notable work there that he chose Japanese, but that is not necessary to continue to live and work in Japan and we have no sourced evidence as to what his nationality currently is.

This is more an issue for what goes in the infobox nationality attribute. As we have no sourced info as to what his nationality is it should be removed.

This is not an issue for the short description, intro sentence and lead. Per MOS:CONTEXTBIO the nationality context that goes there is where he lives, works, is a permanent resident and where his notable activities are. Should be "American and Japanese" as per refs, many of which list him as both. In lack of context, I think both would fit since he's American-born and still makes American based work. Ortizesp (talk) 07:00, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

He has only one notable American film in filmography, I didn't check the ones without articles. He doesn't look to have a notable career in the US, just in Japan. His American birth doesn't seem to matter at all in his acting choices, no more than it would for any Japanese actor who takes roles in American films when they need a Japanese character. Not named Chiba[edit]

Why is Mackenyu named Maeda (or Arata) if his father is Sonny Chiba (real name Shinichi Chiba)? Shouldn't he take the name Chiba? Did he take his mother's lasy name or something? 2.42.9.98 (talk) 19:32, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
