Redirect from List of songs by Elvis Presley[edit]

The above article existing for a long time, but it was purely a list of songs, supposedly alphabetical (A Big Hunk O'Love under "A"), but no other information whatsoever. I have been through the list to check the songs and correct titles (many of the titles failed WP:MOSTYLE, some I couldn't confirm actually existed. To add all the information to the original page, table it, and add more information made it too much like very hard work (rather than easy hard work!), so I created this page and redirected the other page. There are some songs that I haven't been able to establish as Presley recorded songs and I list them below.

  • Anyone - or Anyone (Could Fall In Love With You)?
  • Dainty Little Moonbeams
  • Dominic
  • He's Only a Prayer Away
  • I Ain't About to Sing
  • I'm A Roustabout - same as Roustabout?
  • Jesus Walked That Lonesome Valley (known by other names?)
  • Let Me
  • Let Us Pray
  • Little Mama
  • Long, Lonely Highway
  • Lovely Mamie
  • My Baby's Gone
  • Rock of Ages (Christian hymn) Might be known as different name.
  • Signs Of The Zodiac
  • Spring Fever
  • Wild in the Country

Somebody more familiar with Presley might be able to add quite simply, including others missed. Oh and this list is much longer than List of songs by Elvis Presley ever was. happy editing. --Richhoncho (talk) 20:12, 8 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Several things to note. (I'm a) Roustabout (Recorded March 3, 1964) is NOT the same as Roustabout (May 14, 1964). There were two different songs with this name, written by different people. One was not used in the movie but both were still finished by Elvis and both have been officially released. One of them is NOT on this list.
The song Love Letters was recorded two different times with two different masters of the same song were released. One recorded on May 26, 1966 the other June 7, 1970. Therefore since there were two released and two recognized masters both should be noted, they are not.
Elvis also sang On Top Of Old Smokey in a movie and it isn't on the list but should be.
There are two songs with Fool in the title. One is simply "Fool" and the other is called "The Fool". He sang and released both of them, "The Fool" is not on the list.
The Last Farewell is not on the list.
The Prisoners Song...Wings Of An Angel is not on the list.
The Wonder Of You is not on the list.
Sources for all of this information can be found at The Elvis Recording Sessions at Keithflynn.com. Keith works with Ernst Jorgensen who is in charge of the entire Elvis Presley catalog at Sony and is the authoritative resource for Elvis recordings. I don't know how to edit here and I don't want to become a member, that is why I am posting this information here. 2806:102E:18:3E59:F1F2:E88C:645D:2CD0 (talk) 06:14, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Black Star is not on the list either but was released. 2806:102E:18:3E59:F1F2:E88C:645D:2CD0 (talk) 06:16, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The Walls Have Ears is also missing from the list 2806:102E:18:3E59:F1F2:E88C:645D:2CD0 (talk) 06:33, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Now updated with some of the songs above. All that remains are :-
  • I Ain't About to Sing ????
  • Little Mama
  • Lovely Mamie
  • Rock of Ages (Christian hymn) Might be known as different name.
These are already in the list/shouldn't be in the list.
  • Anyone – correct name Anyone (Could Fall In Love With You)?
  • Dominic – from the film “Stay Away, Joe” but not sung/recorded by Presley.
  • I'm A Roustabout - same as Roustabout
  • Long, Lonely Highway – already listed under (It's a) Long Lonely Highway
My Baby's Gone – same song as I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone

--Richhoncho (talk) 19:31, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Because it was added at a later date, I'll just note for the record that "Dominick" was indeed recorded by Presley (and released by RCA on one of the Double Features compilations) and indeed is performed by him in the movie. This can be verified by calling it up on YouTube as the scene is there. And "I'm a Roustabout" is a different song to "Roustabout". 96.51.188.175 (talk) 05:07, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

List of songs recorded by Elvis PresleyList of Elvis Presley songs – Per the other entries at Category:Lists of songs by authors or performers (note: there are 278 right now and I recently moved 19 of them from "List of songs recorded by [X]" to "List of [X] songs"—the vast majority were already in the latter format.) —Relisted. BDD (talk) 19:22, 19 September 2012 (UTC) Justin (koavf)TCM 21:01, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. The present title is correct insomuch it states precisely the relationship between artist and songs, which is more than the proposed title does. Other lists in this group include List of songs written by, and the present title follows that precedent - not all 278 entries are "List of XXX songs" as the nominator suggests - even including the 19 he claims to have moved and are now in of need reverting. --Richhoncho (talk) 21:13, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - To bring it in line with the title format of most other song list articles (like List of The Beatles songs and List of Pink Floyd songs). Despite Richhoncho's insistence, there is no discernable difference between a "[Artist] song" and a "song recorded by [Artist]." "[Artist] song" does not imply the song was written by the artist.Father McKenzie (talk) 18:29, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Question, Will you be asking for List of songs covered by The Beatles and List of The Beatles songsto be merged into one article in line with your concept of "bring into line with the title format"? --Richhoncho (talk) 18:45, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Though I do think that particular article may be superfluous (not to mention Template:The Beatles which is the most ridiculous, overcomplicated thing on Wikipedia), that's a completely different issue altogether. We're talking about naming conventions, and I don't think there's enough of a difference to warrant the sweeping renaming you're advocating among this type of "general song list" article.Father McKenzie (talk) 18:59, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But there is no naming convention amongst Category:Lists of songs by authors or performers, never has been. There are 40+ different stylisations at present. Count them if you like! I ask the question, if "List of songs written by XXXX" is acceptable, why not add the qualifier for recording artist? I have yet to see a valid reason not to clarify. What is actually wrong with specifying that this is a "List of songs recorded by Elvis Presley" as I intended when I put it together, it omits live performances, does not claim he wrote any of the songs (although he is credited as appropriate). IOW, the title presently reflects the content of the article. Are you really saying that WP naming conventions take precedence over accuracy?
Are you going to nominate the superfluous article for deletion? --Richhoncho (talk) 19:19, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You can compare two lists titled "[Artist] songs" and "songs recorded by [Artist]." However, you cannot compare two lists titled "[Artist] songs" and "List of songs written by [Artist]," because one is a general song list and the other is a more exclusive, narrowly defined song list. There only seem to be two naming stylizations for general song lists (the one's I named), of which "[Artist] songs" seems to be the predominant. My point is that the qualifier is unnecessary, because it is already assumed that an "[band/artist] songs" are "songs recorded by an [band/artist]." It's like renaming "List of Abraham Lincoln speeches" to "List of speeches spoken by Abraham Lincoln."Father McKenzie (talk) 23:34, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We need songs produced by, songs written by songs with lyrics by, songs with music composed by, etc but you say we don't need it for recording artists. Trouble is, as the nominator confirms with this move, amongst others, there is a logical reason use a qualifier. This won't happen with speeches, so your example is not relevant. If you object to to "recorded," then make another suggestion, perhaps, "performed" to bring into to line with the category title? At the moment all you are saying is "I don't like" which is an opinion, not a reason! --Richhoncho (talk) 05:56, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Additional comment : WP Policy say that article names should follow WP:NDESC and WP:PRECISION. The proposed title does NOT meet the criteria of these two policies, being neither descriptive nor precise.--Richhoncho (talk) 13:53, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, short, precise and concise. There's no need to add "recorded by" to the title. --The Evil IP address (talk) 12:06, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. This requested move is now redundant insomuch as the matter has been discussed generally at WP:SONGS and there is overwhelming consensus to name these lists in this style. --Richhoncho (talk) 13:36, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Additional information[edit]

Since this and other nominations for renaming there has also been a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Songs#Naming_conventions_for_list_articles where there is a consensus that the convention should be List of songs recorded by [artist]. 3 other RM nominations have already been resolved as List of songs recorded by Jennifer Lopez, List of songs recorded by Perry Como and List of songs recorded by Rihanna and the greater majority of articles now use this format. This RM discussion should now be closed as no move. --Richhoncho (talk) 10:28, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Missing track[edit]

As IP edits are sometimes reverted without cause, I added a missing song to the list: the infamous "Dominick" recorded for the soundtrack of "Stay Away, Joe" and released by RCA on one of its Double Features CD releases in 1994. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 15:30, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Corrections[edit]

A large number of recording date errors and first release errors were spotted, which have now been corrected. My primary source is Jorgensen "A Life in Music: The Complete Recording Sessions", with the Young Love and Peter Gunn titles added per the RCA Complete 68 Comeback Special box set. Elvis' involvement in The Climb confirmed in a number of places, but I think the official RCA/FTD release of Viva Las Vegas counts as a definitive source. I'm pretty certain Jorgensen lists additional titles not included here. I'll check when I have a moment. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 19:01, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Source column[edit]

I suggest deleting this column as no one is using it. If it's just going to be randomly used (and generally all it is is a restating of the album information already verifiable by examining the album), then I don't see the point. Any controversial or disputed additions to the list can be cited next to the title. I'd remove it myself per WP:BOLD but I don't want to take a chance of messing up the formatting. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 13:43, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
