By popularity

Could someone make a "By popularity" category for this list of search engines?

It would really help users to make up their mind about what search engine to use especially in terms of the private ones. Like how could I tell which private one has most searches? Is it Startpage.com or duckduckgo.com?

New category for Search engines for research

Research publications are searchable in search engines which are dedicated to them like BASE and MyScienceWork for Open Acces publications or Google scholar for a wider range of scientific publications. Those can not be listed in Medical as they also link to articles in physics, chemistry or social sciences.

No wonder why google does not work as a search engine.

As most list in Wikipedia this is an internal list of X that is notable enough to have its own Wikipedia article. This is perfectly normal. That's not the point. The point is that the title says it's a list of search engines, whereas the lede says that it's a list of articles. Inconsistent. Numbering of search engines looks like a rating

Why are the search engine tables are numbered? That looks like a rating and I do wonder, why a specific search engine is at rank XY. Merger proposal

Note that the scope of outlines and lists differ. For example, Outline of sharks presents subtopics of the entire subject of sharks, while List of sharks lists species of shark. Links about breeding habits of sharks do not belong in the list, but fit naturally in the outline. The same applies to search engines. A list of names of famous search engine designers would fit within the scope of Outline of search engine, but would be out of place in a list of search engines. This page is locked. Like really? How controversial can a list of search engines possibly be to necessitate such a drastic move? I mean, I can understand the need for locking wikipedia pages such as, say, abortion or the holocaust or what not. But locking down a page about a list of available search engines? You people all are either completely ding-dong paranoid off your rockers, or you work for google and don't want people uploading alternatives.

Whatever the case keeping such a non-controversial page locked is an abuse of the wikipedia lock feature and an abuse of your powers as editors. Not to mention the article is a complete mess and NEEDS to be cleaned up which can't be done since you locked it. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU??? In September 2014, I have released a search engine that can search for images videos apps web torrents mp3 and maps. It's called ZendaSearch it's located at zendasearch.ca and zendasearch.com. Blekko

The search engine Blekko has been bought by IBM, and is now unavailable according to its homepage (Blekko.com), which redirects users to an IBM blog post describing the aquisition and the future for the search engine (http://asmarterplanet.com/blog/2015/03/better-way-tap-big-data-gusher.html). This means that it should be removed from the "Content-general" section and added to the "Defunct or acquired search engines" section. Section issues

While I don't have an issue with the alphabetical listing of search engines in the By content/topic' section, I do have an issue with the "Alexa global ranking". An argument can be made that it is important but it also appears to be irrelevant and easily outdated. A 90 day ranking means that the Hotbot figures, shown in the table of "298,374" came up as "217,396" in global internet engagement today (2019-12-08 on a random check), so is severely flawed. The difference of 80,978 is around a whopping 27% discrepancy from the apparent listing date of 2018-12-28. If these figures are going to be used they must be updated. If nobody cares to do this then the information needs to be presented as historical (information as of a certain date) or the ranking section of the table removed. While using Amazon's Alexa may provide information valuable to some the encyclopedia value is certainly in doubt when it is not accurate. Providing the word "Alexa" 25 times in the reference section may actually improve the ranking of Alexa (or Amazon or both), or provide some apparently needed company advertising, the content is useless when presented as factual with a reference that is actually far outdated. Ranking

For the purpose of relevancy and ranking it would seem far more important to list the "search engine ranking" (those that are listed) over a "global internet engagement" ranking that leaves horrible gaps. Google is listed as #1, Baidu as #4, Yahoo! as #7, Bing as # 47, and so on. I would see more significance in the ranking within the search engines (the particular subject of "List of search engines") over some global overall ranking. Surely my concerns are justified. I also checked the Alexa site and Yahoo shows to have dropped to #11. It was #10 on September 08, 2019. Bing shows to have raised to #29. From September 08, 2019, the rankings ranged from 29th, to 28th (9-21-19), to 29th (9-29-19), to 28th (10-01-19), to 29th (10-07-19), to #28 (10-15-19), #29 (10-18-19), to #30 (10-27-19), to #29 (11-03-19), to #30 (11-19-19), before settling on #29 on 12-01-19. The site fluctuates too much to be used for specific published information in an encyclopedia. Even at that, it is a long way from the published 47th place. Quick suggestion: Would be worth adding the GoTo Search Engine into the list as it is historically significant to the sector. It was founded by Bill Gross, acquired by Yahoo and the functionality later replicated by Google to form the basis of its ubiquitous AdWords product. Without GoTo, it is unlikely Google would have monetised its search results effectively.

I could make the edit I wanted. The only thing I messed and I don't know how to fix is the references, though I've kept a copy of the previous version to add them later on when I have time. The "REF#" column I added is specifically intended to contain the reference numbers that will link to the "References" section".

• I am sorry, but I reverted the change of the various lists into the one big table. Clearly, making the table was a big task and I have to admire the effort involved, but the resulting table is far too big to be readable. It is a difficult to follow on my large desktop screen and impossible on a small mobile screen. Also, much of the table is empty cells, so having one unified table does not seem very valuable. It might be worthwhile to re-organise the article and also to convert some of the lists to tables, but only if the resulting table is fairly "full" — GhostInTheMachine ^{talk to me} 08:44, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

  If you didn't like it being "too big", you could have divided it into smaller parts like the ones on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_content_management_systems, instead of throwing all my work away.

  I felt sceptic about how long this edit would last, so I saved an off-line copy of it on my computer. Thank goodness I did!

  It's really not of much value for me to work on a software article in which the amount of listed open source programs/services is disproportionately smaller than those which are closed source. Indeed, I made the edit to help future readers realise which projects were worth looking at based on an objective comparison.

  In my opinion the only ones which are worth are just the open source ones. Generally, they are more privacy friendly and they DO wish to CONTRIBUTE with their code/data/content to potential derivative works, which is the driving force of Wikipedia itself, and clearly not the one of Google, Microsoft, etc.

  I just find ridiculous that in a website like Wikipedia (supposedly copyleft) there are so many closed sourced projects and so little open source ones listed. Again, structuring everything into a table would have helped see this difference to further encourage adding more open source projects.

  Regarding the empty cells, I only used the information it was already present in the article, so if there are so many empty cells, it's because there's a lack of previous work in relationship with "information parity". I'd love to be able to fill every cell all alone, but the task is just huge. There are like around two hundred websites listed, clearly not something that can be completely edited in one day.

• Believe me, I understand the frustrations of having your work reverted – I did not undo your work lightly. The advantage of a wiki is that all versions of a page are preserved (unless specifically erased due to some major transgression). Your version is still available in the article history and it could be referenced in any future discussions like this {{oldid2|1039307154}} which makes this link: [1] or with a permalink, which looks like this.
  The main issue with the One Big Table was the width – on a small screen it vanishes off to the side and scrolling to view the right side of it loses the row labels on the left side. Many articles use tall tables, but wide ones are often a major problem.
  The other issue was the amount of empty cells. It is not only that previous editors have not provided the information, but in many cases the column was not relevant to the type of entry.
  A way forward with this article would be to start converting some of the lists into tables. Pick lists where the table would have a limited number of columns with most cells having content or could be expected to have content reasonably easily. Work in smaller steps so that each edit is around just one table. Then, if two or more tables have most columns in common, maybe combine them. It would be nice if Wikimedia offered selectable columns, so that by default you only saw specific columns, but could either add columns, or require that a column contain specific values. Why did this reversion happen?

It was not unexplained. When reverted, there was an edit summary of "rmv addition with no article". When you edit the article, there is a large warning that states: "Entries in these lists should be "notable". They should already have a stand-alone Wikipedia article based on in-depth coverage in multiple independent sources (see also WP:GNG and WP:WTAF)." Sorry if I did not make that clear earlier through the way I posted, but both Qwant and SwissCows are already listed on the main article for other categories and they also filter inappropriate content, so, I believe they are notable enough for the purpose of the previous edit. Could I be wrong for some reason I did not consider?

I see now. You added a link to a specific brand for Qwant that deals with a child-friendly search. That does not have an article, but you can add a label to a link for Qwant like this: "[[Qwant|QwantJunior]]". The link for Swisscow did not work as you added a capital C in the middle (our links are case sensitive). DuckDuckGo vs Brave Search backend distinction

Both DuckDuckGo and Brave Search use Bing to source links, supplemented by their own indexes (see https://search.brave.com/help/independence#third-parties and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DuckDuckGo#Search_results). Timpi is the first decentralized search engine that maintains its own index, which is independent from 3rd parties.
