Flags[edit]

I just chanced on this page and wonder why the flags of England and Scotland are being used instead of the United Kingdom. There are also long-running issues over whether the Ulster Banner is appropriate. In fact, why are any flags being used? I don't think it adds anything much to the article. More Accidents at Ghotki[edit]

Hi, came here fact-checking a change to 1990 that mentioned a crash at Ghotki, listed here as Sangi train station near Sukkur (4 Jan). The number killed is unclear, NYT lists 'over 200', here its 307.[1] However, there's another crash not listed here - 100 dead in crash near Ghotki, 1991[2], when the Karachi to Lahore train hit a parked freight carriage.   • Support - The article is too big, but I favour splitting these List of rail accidents articles into decades, at least back to 1880 (if not earlier), as I've already mentioned in the recent talk in what is now Talk:List of rail accidents (pre-1900)‎. You should know that I've just created four sandboxes for Lists of rail accidents in the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's. There are broken references for every decade except the 1960's for some reason. I strongly urge you to add whatever elements are necessary for these articles, split them off promplty, and rename this one List of rail accidents (1950-1959). ----DanTD (talk) 13:56, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List of rail accidents (1990–1999) is now live, the 2 templates ({{Lists of rail accidents}} and {{Rail accidents}} updated, and the article hamstrung (Added {{under construction}} tag and "hid" links to data referring to the 1990s). Could you check that I've not messed up, please? I've actually left the 1990s data in this article, one or other of us can remove 1960-1999 in one go at just before rename. I wish you hadn't done the rename -- I had to reedit both templates so that the correct name got emboldened. There's also the problem of double-redirects which will have to go through once again (or more if there's another intermediate rename/move). Well, this version has separate chapters for Notes, reference, and other external links, that the chapters that were split-off don't have. I just hid a second "references" chapter in the 1990's list, and if it's appropriate, I may expose it, and rename the existing reference chapter "notes." As for waiting to rename this one, I don't mind, but I'd like to be able to remove those that aren't from the 1950's before this. ----DanTD (talk) 15:27, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I follow you now, as you may have already noticed. I've renamed to "References" and "Sources" throughout, just to be consistent, even if not quite in line with WP:APPENDIX. I actually did a copy and paste to a TextEdit with a find and replace, which changed from the old "bgcolor" to use styles as per the List of rail accidents (1900–1949) edit earlier today.

I've also removed the 1960s data from this one, so it should be ready for the rename, which I'll do in ten minutes time (only an hour late). Tim PF (talk) 21:14, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • May 25, 1950 – Chicago, Illinois, United States: Streetcar named "Green Hornet" while operating on State Street struck a gasoline truck in the rear, causing it to explode and set the streetcar on fire. 34 people died in the fire, with 50 others being injured. The accident was attributed to the motorman (driver) operating the streetcar too fast for conditions.
  • August 18, 1951 – Székesfehérvár, Hungary: A fast train ran into the end of a local commuter train. 6 people died in the accident (also a conductor), and 3 more after transfer to hospital. 28 passengers injured.
  • August 18, 1951 – Debrecen, Hungary: A passenger train heading for Tiszalök collided with a shunting DMU. 11 passengers died because of the wooden-frame coaches.
  • August 16, 1952 – Former Soviet Army carrying passenger train derailed at Rzepin, Slubice, Poland, 23 officers and 136 soldiers are killed.
  • August 26, 1952 – Suchdol nad Odrou, Czechoslovakia: A fast train derails, killing 12 people and injuring 108.
  • December 26, 1952 – Budapest, Hungary: A local train from Szentendre collided on a passenger train, because of a faulty switch killing 26 and injuring 57. The switch attendant was executed on the next day.
  • 26 August 1953 Lower Truro Rail Disaster, Nova Scotia, Canada: 6 members of a 10 member family are killed when a train hits their vehicle on a level crossing on the outskirts of Truro, N.S. William Murray Burgess, his wife Edna McCallum Burgess, and four of their children Geraldine 12 yrs, Esther 8 yrs, Rodney 5 yrs, and Heather 2 yrs are killed at the scene.
  • August 22, 1955 – Spring City Train Disaster, Spring City, Tennessee, United States: School bus disregards crossing signal and is struck by freight train. 11 people dead, 39 hurt; all the dead are school children.
  • October 15, 1956 – Mikumo (present day Matsusaka), Mie, Japan: A Nagoya–Toba express passenger train collides head-on with another express train, and then a passenger train derailed on a safety catch point, crushing four passenger cars in Rokken Station, killing 44 people and injuring 94.
  • March 15, 1957 – near Kuurila, Finland: Southbound night express train from Tornio to Helsinki collides head-on with the Helsinki–Pori express train. 26 people killed and 60 injured.
  • April 27, 1957 – Bylnice, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic):wagon runs away during shunting from Brumov station and collides with a passenger train carrying 20 people, killing 10 and injuring 4.
  • September 29, 1957 – Montgomery, Pakistan: An express train crashes into an oil train. 250 people killed.
  • October 20, 1957 – Two passenger trains, one being the Simplon Orient Express collide head-on at Sirkeci, outskirt of Istanbul, Turkey, killing at least 95 people and injuring another 150.
  • December 23, 1957 – Diesel multiple unit runs into the back of another train in dense fog on the Harcourt Street railway line at Dundrum, Dublin, killing the driver.
  • January 1, 1958 – an Ambala-Delhi local train collided with standing Delhi–Pathankot express at Mohri station, Ambala, Haryana, India, killing at least 32 people, another 85 are injured.
  • April 4, 1958 – A parcels train overruns signals and crashes into an electric multiple unit at Gloucester Road Junction, Surrey.
  • May 28, 1959 – A Gambir, Jakarta to Parahyangan, Bandung express derails and plunges into a ravine on the outskirts of Tjipeundeuj (Cipeundeuy), West Java, Indonesia, killing 92 people and injuring 40.
  • June 5, 1959 – São Paulo, Brazil: Two commuter trains collide head-on in Engenheiro Goulart station, killing 56 people and injuring 100.
  • October 2, 1959 – Dabrowa Bydgoska (near Bydgoszcz): A passenger train collides with a postal bus, killing 23 people.

Unreferenced edit[edit]

Just noticed that an entry for 8 November in Argentina has just been tagged as unreferenced, dont have a problem with that but just concerned that the edit summary by User:Akld guy as Unreferenced. Incident will be removed in 48 hours is a bit quick I would expect it to be left tagged for a bit longer possibly weeks as not all watchers are around everyday, so just to note that 48 hrs is not a lot of time in wikiland. The onus was on the editor who added the incident to provide a reference. In this case, within a few minutes of his addition I added the citation needed tag and advised him on his Talk page that a reference was required. It's not like the incident had been there for a long time with the editor long gone. This was caught within minutes and the editor notified, so if he doesn't provide a reference within 48 hours, it's going to be deleted. He's lucky I gave him so long under the circumstances.
