Inclusion Criteria

This article has survived a request to have it deleted but this has highlighted that there is far too much cruft on here. Please help to keep the article clean by thinking carefully before adding items and by removing any dubious items which you notice being added by other people.

When considering adding an item please ask yourself these questions:

  1. Is it definitely a mascot? A logo with a person or an animal on is not automatically a mascot. A character used in advertising is not necessarily a mascot either. If an advertising character is used for a bit and then dropped then it probably isn't a mascot. If it has been used consistently for a long time then it might be but you still need references to prove it. Do we have reliable references actually describing it as a mascot?
  2. Does it have an article? Ideally every mascot here should have an article. If it has substantial coverage in another article (a full section with references, not just a sentence or two) then that might be OK but be careful.

Things that flag up an item that should be removed include red links, links to articles without the word "mascot" in them at all, links that don't even name the alleged mascot and entries with no link at all.

Serious problems with this list

This article has some serious issues. In essence, it has become a cruft magnet, and is being littered with mountains of rather questionable entries. I removed a lot of entries that could not be considered mascots by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm pretty sure there's more that I missed. So I'd like to ask you all - can this list be salvaged/improved, or is it a lost cause and should be deleted? ElectricBurst(Electron firings)(Zaps) 17:16, 17 July 2016 (UTC)
