Is this list a joke?[edit]

I mean, genuinely, who's adding stuff like Shadow the Hedgehog (a third person action game that, incidentally, never came out for the Dreamcast) or Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions (out of alphabetical order)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:441:8000:DA0D:5C10:918E:C80B:42B4 (talk) 17:18, 28 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all, NOLF[edit]

Hi all. There was a game released sometime around the early 2000s that was set in the 60s and featured a female lead. It was an FPS but I can't find it on the list. Anyone remember what is what? Blaise Joshua (talk) 10:27, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The only game that rings a bell is No One Lives Forever. There are query sections in or around the village pump which are much better to ask questions like this (it's sheer fluke that I happened to reach this talk page now and not 2 years down the line). Quarantine[edit]

Why http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarantine_(video_game) is not in this list? in the article it says quarantine is a fps. Maybe it's not, but i'm sure in someway it should be mentioned in this list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.125.2.138 (talk) 04:32, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hitman[edit]

Hitman games are not FPS, are stealth third person shooters

Freaks[edit]

Seems to be missing Freaks from 1983. 93.106.58.166 (talk) 18:34, 28 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wow...[edit]

Every game that is on this list that has actually been released, I have played :O

I didn't realize how much I loved shooters until I started looking at video game lists and checking off which ones I've played and which ones I've never heard of. The Shooter list has almost nothing I haven't played; just the ones I CAN'T play because they're not out yet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Necro-File (talkcontribs) 15:06, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List criteria[edit]

The inclusion criteria for this list seems a bit wide to me (every FPS ever?)

Maybe the lead should be changed to include the world "notable" and then remove the redlink items? I think this is how most WP lists work. OSbornarfcontributionatoration 23:40, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I like the "width" (i.e. every FPS ever). I've already had a problem with one "Games" editor on Wikipedia who thinks he and only he has the final decision about which games to include in another list. Several people besides myself have complained to this editor about his hair-trigger deletions. In other words, one person's "notable" may not be everyone else's "notable".
When I want to find a "classic" (as in "old") FPS to play, I come to this Wikipedia list because it is all inclusive. Let me decide which game from the list I want to play.
However, I do have a complaint about the contents of this FPS list. Many games in the list are *NOT* first-person shooters. Somebody--not me because I have other fish to fry--needs to move the misplaced games to their appropriate lists.
ProResearcher (talk) 07:54, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't have a problem with making this an exhaustive list as possible, however, like ProResearcher, I'm also very confused as to the selection criteria in terms of it's relevance to the definitions laid out in the main article. It includes many first-person combat simulation games that are not technically first-person shooters (such as Space Tactics, Star Trek, Sub-Roc and Astron Belt), presumably because they are deemed to be of historical significance, and yet other far more more significant titles which are mentioned in the main article, such as Spasim, are not listed.
These type of shooters (ie. space, vehicular or combat flight simulators) are referred to in the article purely from a historical perspective. The article states that, "some commentators may extend the definition obliquely to include combat flight simulators, as opposed to characters on foot", but the clear definition here is "on foot", which is the type the article focuses on, even if this isn't explicit in the article's opening definition of the genre (which perhaps it should be).
The phrase "Doom clone" was initially popular to describe the style of gameplay in Doom-like games, but after 1996 was gradually replaced by "first-person shooter" By 1998 the phrase "first-person shooter" had firmly superseded "Doom clone"
It also points out that use of the phrase "first-person shooter" was used to replace the phrase "Doom clone" when referring to these specific kinds of games, in other words: games which look like DOOM and NOT other first-person combat flight simulators or vehicular combat games. See the inset chart from the Doom article for the increase in usage of the term "first-person shooter", which was, and continues to be, used by the vast majority of the gaming community to describe games where the player is primarily on foot.
Also, many early RPGs that are from a first-person perspective and which contain enemies and projectile weapons are not included. System Shock, Deus Ex and Bioshock are all (quite rightly) listed, and yet Akalabeth: World of Doom, Dungeons of Daggorath, Castle Master and particularly Phantom Slayer (which contains enemies, a cross-hair AND projectile weapons) are not, even though these arguably fit the definition of an early FPS much more than the early vehicular combat simulators.
I suggest the list should remain within the confines of a traditional First-person shooter definition. The alternative would be a list as exhaustive as Balgorg's The History of FPS Games on YouTube, which, although extensive and interesting, strays into vehicular combat games a little too much for my liking.
Here is my proposed list of FPS criteria:
  • Primary Criteria (games must fit all of the following criteria)
  1. The viewpoint is first-person.
  2. The player's environment is represented three-dimensionally.
  3. The player can move freely within there environment (ie. not on 'rails' or viewing a fixed perspective).
  4. The player is primarily on foot (although vehicles may figure prominently in the game).
  5. There are enemies to defeat.
  6. The player uses a ranged weapon to defeat enemies (even though melee weapons may take precedence).
  • Secondary Criteria (games should contain the some of the following features)
  1. The player's weapon is hand-held and visible.
  2. The player has several ranged weapons.
  3. A HUD (Head-up display) is visible.
  4. There are buildings, corridors or other structures to traverse.
Unless anyone disagrees with this approach, I would suggest either editing the list to fit the above criteria, or including a new column to distinguish the games 'on foot' from those in a vehicle, plane or spacecraft. Also, if anyone has any other suggestions for including additional criteria, please feedback.

Cunningmunki (talk) 12:36, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed visible cross-hair and visible projectiles from the secondary criteria, as there are several significant FPS games which do not contain these (such as Wolfenstein 3D!), and added multiple weapons. Cunningmunki (talk) 12:40, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think more criteria may be needed. For instance, the Ultima game listed seems to have a cursor and you click on the screen to attack that part of the screen. This doesn't sound like a first-person shooter as traditionally understood to me. Aiming should be at a fixed part of the screen or via crosshair.

Also, I would add that the above criteria must be present in combination. A game where you move about freely in the third person which has a first-person look mode or rail-shooter sequence is not a first person shooter. (I am removing Metal Gear Solid: Integral.) Franchise[edit]

I suggest deleting the "Franchise" column from the table for these reasons:

  1. Given the amount of space that the column consumes, the information value that it conveys is minimal
  2. Most games do not have and will never have a value in this column
  3. The franchise name is often found in the "Title" of the game

The same information can be conveyed better in a variety of ways:

  1. Add a new section to the page entitled "Franchises"
  2. If a game belongs to a franchise, link the game's title to a separate Wikipedia article about the franchise.

If there's no serious dissent, I will delete the column in a month.

Ultima Underworld?[edit]

Whoever put Ultima Underworld on the list? UU is not a shooter, it's an RPG. lol :)

Body Count - (2011)[edit]

Hi, I'm not sure how to add this to the list but Body Count needs to be included - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodycount_%28video_game%29 — Preceding unsigned comment added by JONNY1992UK (talkcontribs) 16:24, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Table enhancements[edit]

The table should get a column for "license" (e.g. "GPL, proprietary, etc.), adding valuable information e.g. for all readers who are on the search for Free Software games. Further "AMI", "WIN", "LIN", etc. are no official abbreviations, thus they are not usable in an encyclopedia. They should be replaced by the official names or abbreviations, i.e. "Amiga", "Microsoft Windows", "GNU/Linux", etc. This can be done easily by using an external editor with capability of "search and replace". --Tomakos (talk) 19:50, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Alien Cabal[edit]

Before you object, I found a YouTube walkthrough of this first-person shooter just a few minutes ago. Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi4MAnnvfmE — Preceding unsigned comment added by NDEdminson (talkcontribs) 01:46, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Too many games that aren't FPS[edit]

Does anyone here think that first person space gamers qualify as FPS? I agree with the suggestion above that FPS are primarily on foot. 24.155.166.82 (talk) 01:00, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
