Table Format[edit]

After a user converted some of the monthly information into table format I reverted one back to its original form before deciding to let you decide. I personally preferred the old version as it was easier to maintain and edit, it also seemed better structured and easier to understand. However, you may have a different opinion and i'd love to hear what everyone else thinks should be done. LabradorGroup (talk) 09:34, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah that was my idea. Thinking about it, I do agree that we should leave it the way it is for the time being. Although I do think that the table format could have done with a bit of tweaking, then it might have looked a bit better. Perhaps we could try it next year? And, also, maybe we could consider including the depth for all of the quakes as well - if not in table, it could be like this:

A ... quake struck ... on ... at a depth of ...

or something similar...............any thoughts on this one?

Death toll[edit]

February deaths = 65, January deaths = 1, Total deaths = 67. Something wrong here. The body text needs to list the death tolls so that the figures can be checked. -- SGBailey (talk) 12:05, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Remove Foreshocks/Aftershocks?=[edit]

It seeems pointless to hve this list clogged up by every notable aftershock of the Japan quake. Only the original quake should be listed, with a possible mention of the large number of aftershocks —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.159.202.205 (talk) 22:04, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The aftershocks of the Japan quake should still be counted in the number of quakes on March. also the list is only supposed to have mag 6 and above. I think any quakes below 6 should be removed, and the total number of mag 7's in March be corrected to account for the foreshocks and aftershocks.Matt The Tuba Guy (talk) 08:16, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"per se"?[edit]

I find the following statement extremely uninformative. "Note that an increase in detected earthquake numbers does not necessarily represent an increase in earthquakes per se". The chart shows a very steady increase of earthquake activity since 2000, and then follows with a comment like this. If we were talking about a chart taken in the early 1900's I could agree with such a statement, but the fact is that the sharp increase in earthquake activity cannot be so easily dismissed with a comment "per se". This should at least be removed so the reader can determine for themselves "why" - unless someone wants to place statistics on how many more inclinometers have been installed since 2000 to measure earthquakes. However, in 2000 there existed equipment (and it was in place) to detect ANY earthquake above 1 anywhere in the world. Today we may have better equipment to pinpoint a closer epicenter (although even that was pretty good in 2000), the fact is that larger earthquakes are happening at an alarming rate as evident by the hard numbers.

Please note too that the linked article "Earthquake Myths" was written in 2001. I have an email to verify this. The sharp increase in earthquakes in the past 10 years cannot be answered and explained by an article written before that occurrence.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Jprcox (talk • contribs) 02:06, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why were certain earthquakes removed?[edit]

I don't see why Dawnseeker2000 deleted several events with this revision. Two of those earthquakes were significant intraplate earthquakes, and I can verify that the Oklahoma earthquake was the strongest in that state's history, being felt from several hundreds of miles away. Why do this? Not all of those should be here, but since the Virginia quake was restored, I think the Oklahoma quake ought to be kept as well. The Oklahoma quake also came as part of an ongoing swarm since 2009; please answer my inquiry. Dustin (talk) 23:18, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The notability of those events are debatable, but I'm not very willing to have those types of discussions, as my work around here primarily involves content creation. Maintenance of our earthquake articles and lists is part of that, of course, but the lists are not my primary focus. In this case, what happened was I reverted what another user had done, because it was an unexplained edit that removed content. I then realized that the removal was mostly valid based on the instructions at the top of the page (again, that can be contested) and so reversed my own edit (the one you've linked). @Dawnseeker2000: All I really think is important to be added back is the Oklahoma event because it was felt over a very widespread distance, it was the strongest in the state, it was an intraplate earthquake, and it was part of an ongoing upsurge of earthquakes and wasn't just some isolated event.[1][2] (I believe that the advisory is still valid on the second source).
