Long introduction[edit]

Hey ColWilliam, is been a while. I just wanted to comment on this article's introduction. Do you think its too long or is it how its meant to be structured? Great job on getting it B-grade by the way!- (Wikipedian1234 (talk) 03:10, 23 September 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Greetings Wikipedian1234. You are probably correct about the long intro. I've broken it with another section header, placing the second portion of the old intro under the new section "Massachusetts to Ohio". Thanks. --ColWilliam (talk) 14:55, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Title[edit]

Shouldn't this article be "American pioneers in the Northwest Territory," or "American expansion into the Northwest Territory," or something similar? I think "American pioneers to the Northwest Territory" sounds not only a little weird but unencyclopedic. Maybe it's just me?--$1LENCE D00600D (talk) 22:30, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but I prefer the title as created. Regards. --ColWilliam (talk) 00:35, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing this article[edit]

Despite all the banners currently at the top of this article, I believe it can be salvaged. To do so:

  • Purge the article of all self-published sources, which we cannot use on Wikipedia, e.g. works by Milligan & Zimmer.
  • Move the long poems to Wikisource. They could be briefly quoted here as examples of how the settlers were commemorated.
  • Be cautious about citing primary sources. Prefer secondary ones instead.
  • Tone down the puffery. This is an encyclopedia article, not a tribute. We can quote those who give high praise, such as David McCullough.
  • Better sourcing of arrivals. The article says Mary Owen was the first woman settler, but the previous section names a "Lisbeth" who came earlier. I believe this is Elizabeth Dana, daughter of Captain William Dana, who married Joseph Barker, also an early settler whose memoir is listed in the sources but who doesn't make the list of early settlers.
  • What about the non-white settlers? Some of these settlers brought Black slaves or indentured servants with them, but they are omitted on this list. For example, Christopher "Kitt" Putnam was a slave or indentured servant of the Putnam family who arrived with Israel & Aaron Putnam, but they are mentioned and he is not. Let's list everybody.
  • After each name on the list, we should add some (reliably sourced) info about that individual. A good example of how to handle this is List of Alamo defenders.
