Colonies[edit]

Established...[edit]

I'm intending on expanding this in the following way...
Established will be the single date (like August 13, 1800) that the chapter was chartered (with of course a special note on Alpha Kappa) and then another with "Dates of Activity" (like 1800-1875; 1899-1906; 1988-) I think we can get *most* of this out of the Centennial, though some dates of inactivity are going to be more difficult.Naraht (talk) 13:52, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Alpha actually inactive in 1936???[edit]

Beta Upsilon[edit]

Beta Upsilon was born from the Psi Theta Epsilon sorority, founded September 15, 1975 at Saint Leo College. In 1990, Saint Leo disbanded all local fraternities and sororities and if the groups wanted to continue, they had to affiliate with a national. Psi Theta Epsilon became a pledge colony of Theta Phi Alpha in about 1991, and the Beta Upsilon chapter was established in 1993. Despite the merger with Theta Phi Alpha, the group retained nearly all of their Psi Theta Epsilon traditions and were only Theta Phi Alpha on the surface for the most part. By 1995, most of the national groups at Saint Leo had lost their national affiliations because of low numbers or hazing. Even though Theta Phi Alpha was not among them, the expense of the national was felt by the sisters to be cost prohibitive, and because the other groups that had once been national had continued on a local level without sanction from the college, it was decided by the sisters to disaffiliate with Theta Phi Alpha and return to the identity of Psi Theta Epsilon. This was met with resistance from Theta Phi Alpha national, who sent a national representative to Saint Leo. This intervention was not successful, and the charter was returned to the national office and the chapter made inactive. At no time was hazing an issue, even though the official history book of Theta Phi Alpha lists hazing as the reason for the first incarnation of the chapter going inactive. Psi Theta Epsilon continued until 2003, when a later group of the sisters decided to re-visit the idea of contacting Theta Phi Alpha in an attempt to re-establish a national connection. At this point, Psi Theta Epsilon ceased to exist, and the new group honored and embraced the ways and traditions of Theta Phi Alpha that were not done in the earlier days. The charter of Beta Upsilon was re-established in 2005, and has remained active ever since. This information is for clarification purposes only on this talk page.
