Famous vs Notable Members

I believe it is important to preface the list with a paragraph that alludes as to a description of what we mean by FAMOUS. While I understand that we cannot provide every possible example as a member of the organization I struggle with the process of how these list of members is compiled. Also, what other categories in life/career are deemed to be under the moniker of FAMOUS. Thanks Ricardo

I believe that this list is a compilation of notable sigmas as opposed to famous sigmas; Members of Phi Beta Sigma that have made an impact in their respective professional fields or have some public notability Educatedblkman1914

Titles

The men listed should not have 'Bro.' in front of thier name as everyone on Wiki is not a Sigma. Also, this list is only to show members of PBS, so it is a pretty safe assumption that all men listed are members of PBS.LivelyIvy1908 20:28, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

I agree. I also think that there should be more RS to say that these men are actually a part of Phi Beta Sigma. Miranda 03:01, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
I don't have any sources, but there does need to be sources. The Ross book has some, but I lent it to a friend. What do you think about listing such as 'Dr. John Doe; first to earn PhD from XYX Univ.' Should Dr. be placed in from of thier name if it is also mentioned that they earned a doctorate?LivelyIvy1908 03:20, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
Like for the AKA list, I didn't use titles. I guess we shouldn't use them per consistency, but it's your choice. I don't have access to PBS materials. Miranda 03:35, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Revamping

I am in the process of completely revamping this article in an attempt to improve the it's classification and give it a look that is consistent with other fraternity and sorority articles of it's type. This will include a preface and a reformat to all lists within the article. I would appreciate any help from more experienced wikipedians in the execution of this task. Thanks Eduactedblkman1914 03:34, 13 July 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Educatedblkman1914 (talkcontribs)

I can help with revamping. I was actually going to start this on this week after adding references last week. The changes you have made so far look good, but I don't think the Distinguised Service Chapter should be a part of this article. DSC is internal to the fraternity and most of the 160+ members are already listed elsewhere in the article. Rashad1103 (talk) 15:18, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for help on this project and you make a valid point about DSC members and its relation to this article. Do you think that this information could be moved to the main article, or should just be deleted outright? Eduactedblkman1914 18:48, 13 July 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Educatedblkman1914 (talkcontribs)
I think the DSC should be completed in a template and included in the main Phi Beta Sigma article under the Membership section similar to how the International Presidents section is. On another note I would like to have this list reviewed soon for featured article status after further cleanup. I think any unreferenced names should be moved to this discussion until a reference can be found for each.Rashad1103 (talk) 15:56, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I agree on both suggestions that you brought up, lets make it happen! Educatedblkman1914 05:10, 31 July 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Educatedblkman1914 (talkcontribs)

Unreferenced Names

The following list of names are those of Phi Beta Sigma Members who, at the present time are lacking the proper references in order to be included in the article List of Phi Beta Sigma brothers Educatedblkman1914 05:47, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Many of these names are included on the International Website, would this not be a proper reference?Occasio (talk) 19:38, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
If they are listed on the National Website, That is acceptable. If information on where these men were initiated could be found that would be even better --Educatedblkman1914 22:26, 21 April 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Educatedblkman1914 (talkcontribs)
Sorry, but no, that is not acceptable. The organization's website is obviously not a reliable source. Two things must be verified: a. the person's BLP information (esp. their membership) must be verified independently, and b. the person's notability (that is, whether they should even be mentioned here) needs to be established independently. For the latter, having an article on Wikipedia is usually deemed enough evidence--and tons of the people here do not have that. Drmies (talk) 19:26, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
The organization's website is the MOST reliable source! Anyone can claim themself or someone else to be a member of an organization, but only the official membership history of the organization can provide verification. I tend to agree with your second point about notability.--Rashad1103 (talk) 15:19, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Dumping Ground for Entries that fail to Meet List Criteria

I've created a Subpage for Sigma Brothers who, at present time, fail to make the main list for one, or more of the following reasons:

  • Notability – People meeting Wikipedia's notability standards make for good inclusions to the list. Its a good rule of thumb that a person lacking a wikipedia article should not be included. For more see: Wp:Notability (people)
  • Citations/Reliable Sources– Entries must have reference citations that provide validity to a person being affiliated with Phi Beta Sigma. Those entries lacking citations are automatically moved to the subpage. For more see: wp:Identifying reliable sources

An image used in this article, File:Al Sharpton by David Shankbone.jpg, has been nominated for speedy deletion at Wikimedia Commons for the following reason: Other speedy deletions
What should I do?

Don't panic; deletions can take a little longer at Commons than they do on Wikipedia. This gives you an opportunity to contest the deletion (although please review Commons guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to upload it to Wikipedia (Commons does not allow fair use)
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale then it cannot be uploaded or used.
  • If the image has already been deleted you may want to try Commons Undeletion Request
