Theological definition?[edit]

Given the diverse forms that Congregationalism has taken theologically, it's not obvious to me what the scope of this list is supposed to be. Am I correct in inferring that it includes any church that once used or currently uses "congregational" in its name, regardless of theology, but does not include other churches that belong to Congregationalist denominations, but do not have the word "congregational" in the article name? (See Category:Congregationalist denominations and Category:Congregationalism for background.) --Orlady (talk) 20:08, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The scope of the list as intended by me is to list all notable current and former Congregational churches, and this should correspond with and include every item in corresponding category, Category:Congregational churches (currently not an existing category). The category needs to be created and populated, at least with notable churches that were Congregational. If you were interested in doing that, I would welcome that. A good number of churches that are currently categorized as Category:United Church of Christ churches, should also get the Congregational church category, for having been founded and operated as Congregational churches. Since the organized Congregational church merged into the United Church of Christ, there may be no current Congregational churches--I am not sure--or there may continue to exist some current Congregational churches somewhere.

Obviously, in the U.S., churches listed on the National Register of Historic Places and having "Congregational" in their name are likely to be Congregational churches, and I have been proceeding to list those first. It may turn out that a few of these were not in fact Congregational and a correction will have to be made. Like, for example, there is a "Catholic Presbyterian Church" listed on the NRHP which is not a Catholic church. This is no big deal to make small corrections, it is part of the list-building and categorizing process. This is a sensible list-article to have, and it will provide good documentation of historically important scope of Congregational church in the U.S. and the world. --do ncr am 20:31, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Note that the lead section of the article Congregational churches lists three denominational groups active in the U.S. In addition to the United Church of Christ, it describes "the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches; and the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference, an evangelical group". --Orlady (talk) 21:26, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Additionally, I'm perplexed that the new category Category:Congregational churches has been created alongside the existing category Category:Congregational church buildings. Since the focus of this list, and presumably also the new category, seems to be on buildings and not on denominational/theological topics, it's not obvious that the new category is needed or appropriate. --Orlady (talk) 21:26, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

U.K. section[edit]

The current British section of this list includes 7 churches, which are all those having articles within Category:Congregational churches in the United Kingdom. There have been some apparently informed comments about Congregational churches in the U.K. within the ongoing AFD, including about how there were Congregational churches in the U.K. but due to changes there are few now. I think it amounts to the fact that the U.K. section here can and should be developed. It can and should include churches that are notable for their being Congregational in the U.K. historically, that are no longer Congregational, IMO. The section can be split out to a separate article linked from this one. While, with just 7 entries so far I don't see a need for a split yet, but if someone wants to develop that separately that is okay by me too. --do ncr am 15:25, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

further devt of U.S. section[edit]

I've been developing the U.S. section by developing out a row for each NRHP-listed Congregational church. To start, this was specifically to add a row for each church entry in the 2010(?) NRIS database having "Congregational" in its NRHP listing name, which is a pretty good indicator of past or current Congregational-ness of a church. I'm stopping my development for awhile, leaving the following entries not yet made into rows (one item in Washington D.C., many in Maine, Massachusetts, New York, some other states). Perhaps someone else could add these. If they were added, then the table would be more complete for NRHP-listed Congregational churches, but would definitely be missing some not having "Congregational" in their name and missing some NRHP-listed more recently. --do ncr am 06:35, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

article title[edit]

The article was moved, inappropriately IMHO, to a title suggesting this is a list of denominations. It turns out I was able to move it back to the long-standing name, "List of Congregational churches". It is not a list of denominations, unless that term is defined in some unusual way that has not been explained. User:Chicbyaccident, please do comment. About moving the article, if you wish to pursue that, please use the wp:RM process to arrange for a proper discussion with notices. --do ncr am 12:24, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Huh? It looks like the move was a mistake and I don't see any difference of opinion explained. This is a list of individual church buildings and/or congregations, which are no doubt within one or two or three Congregational denominations, and the list is not a list of different denominations. --do ncr am 15:44, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
