Using all of 10½ minutes on his clock[edit]

"Aronian, as Black, defeats GM Ivan Sokolov (2676) in 19 moves, using all of 10½ minutes on his clock to do so [2]"

Who wrote that nonsene? The source cited says clearly:

Quoting New in Chess, 2006-5: "On the Internet the rumour circulated that Aronian had only spent one minute on the entire game. Indeed, his clock indicated 1:29 at the end of the game, but given the 30-second increment [...] this meant that in all he had used up 10.5 minutes. Still not bad."

The only non world champion to reach 2800?[edit]

From reading List of FIDE chess world number ones and Methods for comparing top chess players throughout history, it seems like Aronian is the only one of the six persons to have reached 2800 to date to not have been world champion. Or does this constitute WP:OR? 173.168.177.70 (talk) 22:46, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's fine. However, with rating inflation and Veselin Topalov being a "world champion" in name only, is it really that noteworthy?ChessPlayerLev (talk) 14:51, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Style[edit]

This may be a naive request, but could someone add some comments on his playing style and favoured tactics. What makes him different from other chess players apart from being extremely good?  Tigerboy1966  10:51, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a bit of information to the article. Toccata quarta (talk) 11:35, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the extra detail. That's the kind of thing that makes the article much more accessible for the non-specialist. Tigerboy1966  18:54, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish?[edit]

If only his father is Jewish, then technically he isn't Jewish, and should be removed from the category "Jewish chess players". MaxBrowne (talk) 23:59, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Then why is he listed at List of Jewish chess players? Toccata quarta (talk) 07:59, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@MaxBrowne, what do you mean by "technically he isn't Jewish"? His father is Jewish and that makes him Jewish. See Matrilineality_in_Judaism#Modern_views. It's only the Conservative Jews that are still keep the maternal lineage tradition. In Who is a Jew? article, it says "Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism often accept a child as Jewish even if only the father is Jewish and if the child chooses to identify as Jewish." --Երևանցի talk 03:05, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Links to Commercial (Pay-For) Content[edit]

The PDF article linked to ChessCafe (interview with Levon Aronian) requires a paid subscription of $50. What is Wikipedia's policy on this? I personally don't care for links to websites that then ask for a paid membership. Wikipedia, being free to access, must also make sure its linked information is freely accessible. Curious to hear what others think. Tpkatsa (talk) 18:39, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ChessCafe is a great source for chess content, unfortunately most of it is behind a paywall now (it used to be free). It is not against wikipedia policy to cite non-free online sources, so long as it is verifiable and published by a reliable source. See WP:PAYWALL. MaxBrowne (talk) 21:29, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
By the way there are ways to get around the paywall in this particular case. MaxBrowne (talk) 21:36, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Games[edit]

Aronian vs Carlsen Altibox Norway 2017 has stood the test of time and should absolutely be included in this section — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.211.149.124 (talk) 02:55, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Aronian not yet playing for US[edit]

It is premature to state that Aronian currently plays for the US.

Though he has stated that he will in future, he cannot actually represent the US in international events until (among other things) a certain period of time has elapsed. In fact, how soon he could represent the US is not even certain yet. FIDE (the International Chess Federation) has certain rules that must be met. Also they have to decide on certain interpretations of these rules to arrive at the precise start date. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aves n Leps (talkcontribs) 07:05, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the claims that he plays for the United States as he still competes for Armenia according to the latest FIDE rating list and is currently playing under Armenian flag in the Chess World Cup 2021.--Kiril Simeonovski (talk) 09:52, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality[edit]

Aronian is an Armenian and should not be erroneously referred to as either "Armenian-American" or "American" without a source that confirms he has received US citizenship. As far as I can tell, he has not. 2601:154:C000:6AD0:CD41:E071:C095:96D0 (talk) 04:05, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is true and therefore the categories "...American people of xxx descent" are wrong since they only apply to "... citizens of the United States"--Kreuzberger (talk) 16:01, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
