Negativity[edit]

What do you feel is particularly negative, the problems with the BBCSO were fairly heavily reported over here (mind you the band itself has a reputation for being difficult to get on with at times). David Underdown 08:38, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Slatkin did not become prominent because of the BBCSO; he was an extremely well-regarded conductor long before that thanks to St. Louis. I am not taking a viewpoint on the above debate, but the article should reflect his extremely long and well-regarded career in St. Louis against his relatively brief one with BBCSO. On an unrelated note, I think the commentary on his personal life is not appropriate. Not because it isn't (currently) sourced, but because I would hope (as a listener to both kinds of music) that we could hold the articles on classical music to a slightly higher standard, especially with living persons, than the pop culture ones. -Sarcasmboy 09:19, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Prominent in the US perhaps, he was still not that well known in the UK until the BBC appointment (although he had done some guesting with the other London orchestras). By all means expand on the St Louis position, but I don't think the current amount of space given to the BBC SO is unduly large. Similarly, the reports about his personal life did have a big impact on the way he was perceived over here, and again are only a very smll proportion of the article (though they could be de-emphasised by not having them in a separate section). The issues with the BBCSO also seem to parallel some of those mentioned with the NSO - people's reputations do change over time. Note that in the past I have trimmed some of the worst nonsense about Slatkin and the Proms. David Underdown 09:57, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
