Format of family pages[edit]

The Lee family page is one of the better formatted family pages I have seen. I have used its body as the model for the page on the Mathews family that I have been developing, while for the lead I have used the model of the Taft family. I think it would be nice to develop a standard structure for political family wiki pages, as all seem to be different. I like using the lead to list the offices and states served (instead of identifying particular members), and using the 'era' format for the body. this is a edit but my family on my mothers side is related to Robert e LEE

I would like to also develop the pages of some other significant Virginia families (Randolphs, etc), but I am wondering: For the purposes of a wikipedia page, what is a good definition for 'family'? The Lee family page appears to limit itself primarily to patrilineal descent from the family founder, which, in my opinion, is a good working definition. Richard Henry Lee[edit]

Richard Henry Lee is a descendant of the Connecticut Lee's, google: Thomas Lee House This article combines the Virginian and Connecticut Lees into the same lineage. There is no evidence in record (early 1500's) of the two families sharing a common ancestor in England.

I don't understand the above statement. Richard Henry Lee, the signer of the Declaration of Independence, was a
Virginia Lee. Googling Thomas Lee House produces some results for a house in Connecticut and others for Stratford
Hall in Virginia (built by Thomas Lee, R H Lee's father). Tnvalee 07:44, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

March 11, 2007 - deleted a reference to Helen Keller being a cousin of Robert E. Lee

The kinship may well be true, but, if so, it is through Lee's mother and thus not relevant to this article.

March 30, 2008 - deleted the line: "Current members of the Lee family reside in Georgia. these include William Byrd Lee IV (Bill Lee) and his son William Byrd Lee V (Byrd Lee)." This statement implies that most members of, or a significant number of, the Lee family pulled-up and relocated to Georgia. That is both misleading and irrelevant. Lees reside everywhere. Modern members of the family who hold no political office (at a minimum - elected State officials, Judges, etc.) nor are members of the military (with a minimum rank of General Officer), have no historical significance and do not belong on this page. I myself am a direct descendant of Thomas Sim Lee (I'm an 11th generation Lee - born and raised in Maryland), but it would be inappropriate to list my name here. Please use your God-given sense, and do not dilute the accomplishments of some family members by riding their coattails. That kind of behaviour may be a disgrace to the Lee family name, and is hardly the behavior of a true Lee. In review, this article has distant relationships documented that are unnecessary. As someone else mentioned, how is it justified that Hellen Keller be attached to the Lees by, "(R. E. Lee's) mother's side, a daughter of his second cousin was Helen Keller"? The following line also has little to add to the article: "A descendant of another second cousin was Harry Flood Byrd, Sr." Deleted 1 April 2008. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.13.63.131 (talk) 08:57, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unproven Lee relations?[edit]

  • Lee family of Massachusetts. See [1] {reference only}
  • William Raymond Lee 1807-1891 gravesite. See [2]

I'm a bit surprised that Harper Lee nor her cousin Truman Capote were mentioned in the Lee archives considering that they're both Lee relations or decend from the family lineage even though both spent their formative years in Alabama rather than Virginia or Georgia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.109.126.107 (talk) 12:51, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a wikignoramus; but I note this article lists 2CSA generals related ot Robt. E. Lee and states th ekinship fo Gen./President Zachary Taylor but does not refer to Jefferson Davis' first brother in law and Zachary Taylor's son CSA Brigadier General Richard "Dick"Taylor, an anti-secessionist Louisiana slaveholder planter who actively opposed secession, tried o prevent th fracture of the Democrats in 1860,predicted the secess.South would lose but joined the CSA and played a very big role in western VA, the Valley, the Trans-Mississippi Department and Red River, and the denouement of the war in GA and Alabama. 2600:8807:5440:4F0:FD09:184B:209E:11FE (talk) 19:06, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Shropshire? Yes or no, make up your mind[edit]

We post about this twice here: "The long-held theory for over 200 years is that they descend from the Lees of Shropshire, England. While some twentieth-century scholarship seems to discredit this claim, the exhaustive research of genealogist Alan Nicholls fully supports the Shropshire connection." -and later- "Despite the traditional genealogical assertion of descent from the Lees of Shropshire, some evidence seems to point elsewhere. A study by William Thorndal was published in 1988 by the peer-reviewed journal National Genealogical Society Quarterly,[1] asserting that Richard Lee I was actually the son of John Lee, a clothier, and his wife Jane Hancock; that Richard had been born not at Coton Hall in Shropshire, but in Worcester...." Which one is it? We ned to make up our minds which it is, or word it so we don't argue with ourselves. 138.162.128.53 (talk) 13:52, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was to merge Lee family political line into Lee family, with Lee family political line converted to a redirect. Shudde talk 00:44, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I propose that Lee family political line be merged into Lee family. I think that the content of Lee family political line can incorporated into the Lee Family article. Lee Family is not particularly large, and merging the content may improve it considerably. As well, Lee family political line is currently orphaned, with only List of United States political families (L) linking to it. - Shudde talk 06:36, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Both articles are on the same subject and the two would fit neatly together. BML0309 00:55, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I also agree. I have moved the content from Lee family political line to a new section in this article, and proposed the page be deleted, since the move has been made. I will also begin merging the content into the article itself, instead of just having a section with a list. Freebirds Howdy! 22:48, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
