It is considered incorrect in Spanish to refer to the capital city of the province of Las Palmas as "Las Palmas", since its name is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. As the article on Las Palmas includes a link to the capital city (named properly), I think we shouldn't promote the incorrect usage with a disambig page. A quick google search confirms that in English, it is quite common to refer to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as simply "Las Palmas". As a consequence, several links on other pages to Las Palmas concerns the Canary islands city. Someone clicking such a link should be led to the correct article, either through a italizised link on the very top of the article,

You might be looking for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on the Canary Islands

or a disambig page. Either version is fine with me, really. However, there are several other meanings of Las Palmas, as confirmed by for instance the corresponding page on Spanish Wikipedia es:Las Palmas, so it seems simpler to make a disambig page right away.

Of course, this is English Wikipedia so what is correct and incorrect in Spanish is not so relevant. I notice however that even the Spanish Wikipedia mentions Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on their disambig page, which is logical since the purpose of a disambig page is to guide the reader to the page they were looking for, not promotion of correct usage of words. // habj 08:36, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see it like refering to the United Kingdom as England, or to the Netherlands as Holland, like many of us Spaniards do colloquialy. Of course, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has the added problem of sharing words with the province's name. I am fine with the note I added making clear it is used only in colloquial (never formal) speech. Indeed, I didn't know how English-speaking people refered to it: the colloquial aclaration refered to Spaniards' usage (I never say "I'm going to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria", but "to Las Palmas", or "I'm from Las Palmas" (meaning the city), but in an envelope I write "Las Palmas de Gran Canaria").

Even a cursory glance through the articles linking here makes it obvious that the primary meaning of "Las Palmas" in English (just like in Spanish) is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. There really is no reason not to redirect this page to that article; all that making it a dab page achieves is to make navigating WP more awkward for the user.

As for the issue of terminology, the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria article is already named for the full, correct title of the city. Making Las Palmas redirect there is simply a matter of convenience and ease-of-use for both users and editors. If Las Palmas de Gran Canaria had been named "Las Palmas", then there might be a problem, but as it stands this is moot. -- Hongooi 01:02, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
