Good Start![edit]

I've corrected some of the spelling and punctuation, and removed a bit of the supposition. A few more references might help, and I see too that there are cases of repetition, but otherwise this is a good little article. Enzedbrit 09:40, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Boy Band[edit]

I don't know that the inclusion of the Boy Band member warrants a mention in Notable LGBT New Zealanders. Sure, Rob Arnold was the gay Boy Band member, but there are far more notable members and far more worthy LGBT relevant events, organisations and media-covered groups that have been formed forging other LGBT people into the limelight. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 121.72.65.249 (talk) 08:55, 23 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Name[edit]

It has occurred to me that virtually no gay people use 'gay' as a noun, as in the title of this page. Perhaps a more appropriate name might be 'Gay and lesbian New Zealand'? 'LBGT New Zealand' would work as well, although to me LGBT and its variations always sounds more like a sandwich than a community... --Helenalex 04:18, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm... someone has renamed this 'Homosexuality in New Zealand'. Any idea why? Should it be changed back? Personally I think the current title makes it sound like a medical problem. --Helenalex 22:09, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I did some investigating and it seems that 'Homosexuality in...' is the standard page name. (Homosexuality in Japan, Homosexuality in Iran etc) I still think it sounds like a disease, or at least a problem, but I suppose consistency is a good thing. --Helenalex 22:18, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Consistency is a good thing but there should have been the opportunity to talk on this issue. Besides, the article isn't just on homosexuality, but rather bisexuality and transexuality as well, and transexuals can be homosexual, heterosexual or bisexual. Homosexuality in New Zealand reflects a concept that might be common in other countries but, from a New Zealand point of view, is lesser evolved. We in this country have debated the language concerning our community so vividly and strongly that to be reverted to an international consensus on the term, which will be seen by most in this country as a big step backwards and an unravelling of how we have evolved our self-identification in this country, is a painful imposition. I am not sure that I could contribute to that with too much insight. However, I think that we should revert the article to LGBT New Zealand as 1/ it is not an article restricted to homosexuality, 2/ the article is written in a manner presenting a New Zealand viewpoint to the world and the title should reflect that, 3/ there is need for a uniform 'homosexuality in A, B, C' approach for all similar articles, and 4/ 'homosexuality in New Zealand' would be well served by a completely different article. Suggestion to rewrite article[edit]

The article reads, 'Sex between men was only decriminalised in 1986, and like all countries, there is always the issue of homophobia with which to contend.' I think the second half of this sentence should be rewritten; the tone is too informal. Another thing I don't like is this: 'Due to New Zealand's relatively small population, the LGBT community is small...' This seems like something that is just a little too obvious to be stated; besides, 'small' is a relative term.

A third objectionable thing: 'It is generally accepted that in pre-European New Zealand, same-sex relationships among Māori were not characterised by the same disdain as they were in other societies, although this viewpoint is disputed by some today'. If something is disputed, wouldn't it be fair to say that it is not generally accepted? Skoojal (talk) 05:56, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Websites[edit]

I've removed both websites from the article. The URL that was being used for popularity was http://rankr.projectxtech.com . However if you look at the dating tag then nzdating.com and nzpersonals.com have much higher ranking which may indicate that LGBT use these general sites more than LGBT-specific ones. gaynz.com has some non-personals content ( can't see anything at gay.co.nz unless I signup so I assume there it's 100% personals??) so it might be include-able. I would suggest it be kept if we have a good ref as to how it is an important news source in the LGBT community. - SimonLyall (talk) 00:41, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
