There must be one standard when it's about important singers). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Joseph7075 (talkcontribs) 18:22, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Subjectivity misplaced?![edit]

The introductory paragraph ends with a sentence that states: "Although any assessment of the musical calibre of singers is inevitably partly subjective..." which I find to be out-of-place for many reasons, especially in an encyclopaedic entry. When we speak of classical vocalists, there are many categories into which they fall, and even opera singers have certain sub-categories in which their talents are judged by their peers, the classical music world, and the public. It goes unsaid that the judgment of anything is subjective, and here detracts from the ultimate meaning of the sentence, not to mention poor Björling's life's work.

Given the rest of the sentence measures the assessment of Björling's as one of the twentieth century's greatest tenors along with Caruso and Gigli, this 'subjectivity' phrase should be left out in favour of a more specific qualifier, such as "of the early twentieth century" or "of the early recording era." If there are no objections, I will make the changes. (Peaky beaky (talk) 22:59, 11 June 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Exact date of birth[edit]

http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/67383/Jussi-Bjorling says that Björling was born on 2 February 1911. Many other online sources say 5 February. Paul (User:Lpgeffen) (talk) 19:14, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

We already covered this, but now it needs fixing. The text says: The midwife's register shows he was born on 5 February; however, the church baptism records erroneously show 2 February, and this was the day on which he celebrated his birthday throughout his life. Until this edit, the lede also said 5 February. But now it says 2 February, without any sort of qualification, and is inconsistent with the text. The whole article is now suspect. That's what mindless edits do, when the wider context is not taken into consideration. I'll fix it. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 19:47, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
