NFL Hall of Fame Controversy

I notice there is no mention of the Hall of Fame controversy in which Sydney Seau was not allowed to deliver the speech her father requested her to give. I would be willing to write this if no one else wants to undertake it.

October 2010 incidents

Someone who can edit the page might want to add information about the following (quoted from http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/05/02/2780210/one-question-lingers-after-junior.html):

In October 2010 Seau had driven his SUV over a cliff and it plunged 100 feet into an Oceanside ravine near his San Diego home, hours after his arrest for investigation of domestic violence against his girlfriend.
Astoundingly he suffered only minor injuries. Police asked then if he was trying to kill himself. Seau said he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

How do you know he committed suicide?

He might have been killed. And if he did suicide, then why? Was he in his right mind? Did he have any mental illness, like MPD?

Suicide mention in lead

I had removed mention of his death in the lead initially due to recentism, but after it was confirmed to be a suicide and others kept adding it back in, I figured it was reasonable that the manner of his death will likely be a part of his legacy. Is it reasonable to add in, or is it premature still?—Bagumba (talk) 21:54, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

I think it's appropriate. The purpose of the lead is to summarize the article, and in this case, his suicide will remain a big part of his biography. – Muboshgu (talk) 22:02, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
There appears to be consensus to mention his death. The next issue is whether to describe it as "Seau committed suicide with a gun shot wound to the chest ..." or "Seau died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the chest ...". Calling it a "suicide" to me makes it clear this was an intentional act by Seau; calling it merely a "self-inflicted gun shot wound" leaves it open-ended whether it was intentional or an accident, and the reader is left assuming one or the other or is otherwise unsure until reading the details in the body. "Suicide" seems most succinct to a laymen and more appropriate for the lead, even if the coroner used "official" terminology like "self-inflicted". The option exists to quote the official statement later in the body, if it is deemed important. Note that Louis Braille's blindness could be called "self-inflicted" as he struck an awl into his own eye; however, that article's lead non-ambiguously states "Braille was blinded in an accident".—Bagumba (talk) 22:50, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
Eh, I'm not sure about this. "Self-inflicted" doesn't say suicide explicitly, but it doesn't leave much room for ambiguity. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:22, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Almost every source has in article title or in opening sentences that it was a suicide before giving the official coroner statement verbatim. Do we really need to be a slave to "official" verbage. By comparison, if a sports report said a player had "flu-like symptoms", is it not OK to paraphase that (s)he is "sick".—Bagumba (talk) 19:41, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

No comma in name

The recent edit to add a comma before "Jr" in his name is counter to the spelling in most sources. It is also not present in pro-football-reference.com. MOS:BIO#Child_named_for_parent_or_predecessor says to not place a comma unless it the preference of sources.—Bagumba (talk) 18:34, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Request to change main picture

I would like to propose a change to the main picture used for Junior Seau. I understand that, perhaps, the author maybe a Patriots fan, but it is a fact that the best years Junior had and the fame of Junior Seau began with the San Diego Chargers. I know that there is a bias towards the Patriots because they are considered a better team. But, by the time Junior played linebacker for the Patriots, he was a back up linebacker. HIs best years were behind him and those were spent in San Diego. His best years were not in New England or in Miami. Seau's best years were in San Diego. He will always be remembered as a Charger. When he retired, Seau retired as a Charger and his jersey #55 was retired as a Charger. He is in the NFL Hall of Fame as a member of the San Diego Chargers. Please, could you remove the current photo and replace it with one of Junior in the Chargers uniform? Also, there is no picture of him in the Miami Dolphins uniform. Chargers retired number and HOF

Recommendation

I think this is a very well written article about Junior Seau's football career and his involvement with CTE but I feel like a couple of things could be added and re-organized. My first recommendation is in the lead section. I feel like it does a excellent job with highlighting his football accolades but I think it could be better with mentioning his CTE and his suicide earlier. I believe this because, yes, he is a very known athlete in the football realm but is more known nationally for his situation with CTE and if it is stated earlier the reader can connect more easily. Lastly, I feel like the article can touch on what his family's life is like post suicide and what it is like now so the reader can see how serious CTE is and can see how the family is doing/reacting to itHoltMatheis (talk) 14:14, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Given that he was well accomplished without his death, I wouldn't place it in the opening paragraph, which should be limited to the primary source(s) of notability (MOS:ROLEBIO). Afterwards, it seems like the two other paragraphs already flow well chronologically. The fact that his death is in the lead with a dedicated paragraph seems to be due emphasis relative to more general cases. Compare to MOS:LEADBIO:

When a subject dies, the lead need not be radically reworked; Wikipedia is not a memorial site. Unless the cause of death is itself a reason for notability, a single sentence describing the death is usually sufficient, and often none is included in the lead at all, just a death date.

As for the surviving family members, the guidance would be to apply WP:DUE coverage as it relates to Seau himself. Be wary of having his death become a WP:COATRACK of sorts. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 10:21, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
