Dates/Age?[edit]

Birth/death dates and age don't match. (The field for birth year doesn't match birth year in death date field...and text states 89 years at death.) Social Security Death Index lists his birth date as "26 Dec 1899"--68.81.167.181 (talk) 23:08, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I added a reference from SABR with the disputed dob's. Accordingly, they are:
    • The Social Security Death Index gives his dates as December 26, 1899-June 15, 1989.
    • James A. Riley (The Biographical Encyclopedia of the Negro Baseball Leagues) and Baseball: The Biographical Encyclopedia, compiled by the editors of Total Baseball, agree on the dates of October 26, 1900-June 15, 1989.
    • The Baseball Encyclopedia (Macmillan, 9th ed.) records October 20, 1900-June 15, 1989.
    • Furthermore, Terry A. Baxter, writing in Biographical Dictionary of American Sports (David L. Porter, ed.) uses October 26, 1899-June 14, 1989.
    • Finally, Larry Lester (Black Baseball's National Showcase: The East-West All-Star Game, 1933-1953) uses October 26, 1899-June 15, 1989.
  • I, myself, think he was never born[citation needed] and it is all just part of the greater conspiracy. --64.85.220.22 (talk) 03:08, 8 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

References[edit]

  • Once again, please don't use the year when a full date of publication is available in the references.
  • Reference 25 is a dead link. Please rectify this issue.
  • The publication date in Reference 26 should be spelt out as July 9, 2017 for consistency

Can safely say that this is a well-written article and the only quibbles I have are the minor copy-edits. MWright96 (talk) 11:40, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

MWright96 I think I finished things up. I was unable to find full dates of publication for all the sources but included them where I could. Some of them only had the year and others had nothing at all.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 01:21, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
PS thank you for completing these two reviews with me, especially this one for ol' Judy. Negro league baseball is a sometimes forgotten period of the sport's history, and I respect anyone who helps to rectify that problem.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 01:26, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@TheGracefulSlick: Thank you for making the suggested changes. And yes can agree with the second part of what you said. This article can now be given the GA symbol. MWright96 (talk) 06:31, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Time as a Scout[edit]

The article says that Johnson became a scout for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1951 and lobbied for the team to sign prospect Larry Doby, among others.

By 1951, Doby was a two-time American League all-star who had finished in the top ten in MVP voting. I don't have the book that's being cited so perhaps there's more context here I'm not understanding, but unless there's additional context, it's either untrue or the easiest bit of scouting I've ever heard of.

In unrelated news, I hope my favorite team, the Cleveland Indians, signs this young prospect named Mike Trout. I think he might just be a good player someday. Thejamootz (talk) 15:44, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Thejamootz: I found the book on Google Books. You're right, it made no mention of Doby; only Aaron & Minoso. I'll fix it in a sec. Rgrds. --Bison X (talk) 04:58, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
