I reverted the edits from 189.206.9.179. Most of it was badly written, unsourced, not neutral ("In one of his most daring moves", "The first half of his term should be remembered by most mexicans as a Golden age for the country") and some of it simply untrue (ambassador in Fiji? never heard that before). If you want to re-insert it please write it better and provide sources. Mixcoatl (talk) 20:49, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Former Olympian?[edit]

When I lived in Mexico during his presidency, and several times over the years since then - I had read & heard that José Lopez-Portillo had once competed for Mexico in the Olympics in the Javelin Throw event. I can't seem to find any supporting evidence in several searches of the internet - but I found several mentions of his morning routine of practicing with a javelin (mostly in his obituaries). I don't know how much of the Olympics story is hype or tripe. There was no claim that he ever medaled in the event, only that he once competed on behalf of Mexico. This can make sense in that he was of a rich & privileged background, which would have allowed him the luxury of dedicating himself to such a sport - and the connections to be "selected" for the Mexican Olympic team. Again, I'm not certain of the accuracy of this story, nor of the year he would have competed; but it might be worth some digging to verify & add it to this article.

Thanks!
