Kidnap[edit]

does anyone know how old he was when he was kidnapped? Also, is this the same family behind the stock photo company Getty Images?

He was 16. I've added the birth year. I couldn't find the birth date, but I found other sources that said he was 16 at the time. Also, according to this website, Mark Getty is the getty behind Getty Images. --Arcadian 13:44, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The tale of the kidnapping here - only $2m paid, gang never caught - does not match that in his grandfather's article - gang caught and $17m recovered. -- Beardo 12:19, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

We must remember that the reason for his Ear being cut was due to his G father didn't believe that this gang really had his G son and was asked by the G father to send him his G sons Ear having the mole if really being held for a ransom —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.83.44.174 (talk) 08:46, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV[edit]

Is it really neccessary to use the terms "renowned scrooge" and put "on principle" in quotes? It seems to be more of a judgement of character than an informative statement.

I am going to leave the article as-is for the next few days. If nobody objects or changes the article by next Monday, I will submit the changes myself.

In addition, the quoted sources should be cited at bottom. Again, I will leave the article as is; if no sources are included by Monday I will either research this myself and add the appropriate sources or delete the quote entirely if it cannot be attributed. JustinStroud 15:54, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have no objections. Article is excessively POV.

Drugs?[edit]

This article dosnt mention him becoming blind and paralysed from a drugs overdose (which his fathers article does mention). I do wonder if he has recovered from this - his having a son suggests he did, if conception was after the overdose.

His son was born in 1975, before the overdose, but after he was kidnapped by the Red Brigades.

Name[edit]

No explanation is given for the differences in the name. The aricle is titled John Paul Getty but throughout the article his name is given as Jean Paul Getty. Are both correct? Some explanation should be given, otherwise it looks like vandalism. Jons63 13:40, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jean in French and John is English —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.83.44.174 (talk) 08:41, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rubbish. His official name is either John or Jean. Only royalty have their names translated in this fashion. Geira (talk) 18:46, 10 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

J. Paul Getty III was born Eugene Paul Getty, Jr. His father changed his name to Jean Paul Getty II, and thus Paul became the III.

When his father became an British citizen (and eventually KBE) he took the name (Sir) John Paul Getty II. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avalacher4 (talkcontribs) 04:33, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ear[edit]

Did it actually turn out to be his ear that was received in the post? The article doesnt make it clear. 86.13.11.217 (talk) 16:16, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

His left lower Ear lobe that held a Mole on its skin! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.83.44.174 (talk) 08:38, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Brain damage?[edit]

Does he have a brain damage? / Fred-J 22:51, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

yes he has brain damage he was a additve crack head and over dosed and had a stroke if he cared anything about life he would cherrish it in stead of throwing it away.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.254.203.3 (talk) 13:24, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oooookaaay then. You appear to have a unique and sympathetic understanding of "additve crack head"s and a firm grasp of written English. Why not combine your talents and write a book on addiction recovery? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.84.123.162 (talk) 22:17, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The whole ruling class is diseased and a disease of human society, a cancer that will destroy the host if it isn't removed. The particular case shown in this article is an especially glaring example. 72.228.177.92 (talk) 17:05, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
72.228.177.92 has either deliberately or as an over-sight not mentioned a conviction that Getty had. If mentioned, it would have strengthened his or her case. Getty III seems to have been expelled from several schools, not only the one mentioned. The
Telegraph says that he was expelled from seven schools.

Drug overdose[edit]

The word "prescripion" is used. Has this any proof? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.158.207.21 (talk) 11:28, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistent with J. P. Getty article[edit]

This entry has numerous points that are inconsistent with those listed ont he John Paul Getty (Sr) web page. Specifically, but not only, the quoted text from the kidnappers, and the final ransom amount ($2M vs $2.9M). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.87.172.114 (talk) 14:06, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The whole thing[edit]

There is an obituary at the Daily Telegraph which has an air of authority. This young man lived a tragic life and his story should be told here.

And when is the FX TV series "Trust" going to be included in this? A much more detailed account of the kidnapping - in fact, it's sole purpose. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C3:6265:F900:854E:C640:E7A5:8897 (talk) 10:25, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pneumonia[edit]

The article says "Paul's health began to decline rapidly as his wound became infected, combined with pneumonia caused by the cold winter temperatures which were descending." Pneumonia is not caused by cold temperatures, but by infection with bacteria or viruses. Sadiemonster (talk) 14:45, 2 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Russian roulette[edit]

Nobody would kidnap a person to ransom for tens of millions and then genuinely play Russian roulette with their captive as if they killed their captive then they wouldn't be able to get any money. There was no bullets in the gun, It wasn't genuine Russian roulette, it was mock executions; Russian roulette wording should be changed to subjected to mock executions. HardeeHar (talk) 11:33, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Split kidnapping[edit]

The information is scattered and duplicated in multiple articles. fgnievinski (talk) 06:50, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Fgnievinski: Could you elaborate, please? Which articles are you referring to? Because otherwise, this article doesn't seem long enough to warrant a split. howcheng {chat} 02:18, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

all the articles listed in the hatnote at section kidnapping. fgnievinski (talk) 02:53, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Last child[edit]

Aerosmith referenced j Paul getty's ear in the song "last child". 2601:247:4200:B5C0:3107:C485:4A25:1D22 (talk) 00:46, 28 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
