This article said that Sutherland won five National Championships -- "in 1929, 1931, 1934, 1936 and 1937." Only the last two are widely recognized. After 1936, the National Champion was generally determined by the Associated Press poll. Before that, there were a lot of selectors, but the Unicersity of Pittsburgh was not the consensus champion in 1929, 1931, or 1934. Wiki's entry on NCAA football champions doesn't credit Pitt with titles in those years, so I'm editing that sentence to remove the claim. --Anson2995 14:49, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Widely recognized by who? Who counts? They're recognized by College Football Data Warehouse and listed on the NCAA list of championships. Every single national championship is mythical and one early selector is just as legitimate as any other. Only after the AP and later UPI polls became "established" did they become the "recognized" selectors. In 1936 and 1937, the AP released their final polls prior to bowl game results...so the question is, was the AP the definitive and established selector in 1936 (only the second year of the AP poll and that was after a one year hiatus) like it is now? The answer is No. Did Pitt's 21-0 win over Washington in the Rose Bowl make them more or less of the 1936 National Champ since the AP wouldn't haven considered that game? Whose National Champ in 1936 is more legitimate? The answer is simply personal opinion. I'm adding them back in because, 1) those five dates are actually are widely recognized as noted in A) Sports Illustrated study of 1970 B) College Football Data Warehouse C) NCAA list of champions D) University of Pittsburgh 2) they now appear (and appropriate so) on Wiki's entry on NCAA football champions. I've also added a complete list of every year that one of Sutherland's teams was selected as MNC by any selector because it is thorough and encyclopedic invoking Wikipedia is precise and refrains from any controversial WP:POV. It is up to the individual to decide which are legitimate, because, after all they are all only opinions.
