Giving credit where due[edit]
Trivia question web sites like to ask, "Who sang the theme song for the tv show Baretta?". Their answer? Sammy Davis Jr. Having lived through the era of when the show aired for the first time, I know for a fact that this is not the correct answer. So I began doing several months of research on this. The answer came when I ran across an article by an author by the name of Jon Burlingane who is an authoritative figure when it comes to music. This is what he told me on the subject:
Dave Gruisin was contracted to write the song. January 1975 Show opens with an instrumental version performed by "Rythm Heritage" Although you will find a note on the wikipedia page claiming "El Chicano" did it. Yes EC recorded it. But ABC hired RH to do it.
September 1975 season 2. Jim Gilstrap was hired to do a simple voice over.

At this time Sammy Davis Jr. was under contract with another network and appeared on the Carol Burnett show several times. So there is no way that Davis could have sung it.
The reason for the association is that Davis began performing the song in practically every one of his performances. So much so that it practically became his "signature" song. When the show went into syndication, and the reruns began airing, the powers that be redubbed the shows with the Davis version.
