To expand on my rationale as per WP:CRITERIA the new title is her name and thus is recognisable and natural, it is just as clear as currently Jill Knight is a redirect to this page. It is also clearly significantly more concise and fits our naming style for other better known Conservative MPs with titles such as Margaret Thatcher as well as our more general naming style for people (e.g. Bill Clinton, Barack Obama or even Elizabeth II).
Additionally it seems highly unlikely that Jill Knight's WP:COMMONNAME includes her title. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 14:46, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Full name and date of birth[edit]

There is no foundation for saying that 'Jill' is merely a nickname; it is part of her full name. At every election she contested she gave her full name as 'Joan Christabel Jill Knight', and when raised to the peerage her name is given in the same form. The GRO birth index may be misleading as that only ever gives one middle initial, so the absence of a subsequent 'J' does not actually indicate there was none. In any case, under English law anyone can use any name they like (so long as it is not for the purposes of fraud) and may therefore add a given name without any legal process.

Incidentally the Hansard index gives her birth year as 1923, although this seems to be a year too early. One of the perils of age fabrication is that sometimes people overcorrect. Sam Blacketer (talk) 09:48, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. Good points, although you are mistaken as to your assertion that "The GRO birth index may be misleading as that only ever gives one middle initial"; I have seen a few instances to the contrary at the site, such as:

I have now followed Hansard and the History of Parliament oral history project in altering her year of birth to 1923. An earlier edit (without a source) had also altered the year with the comment "Corrected erroneous link with a different person. Baroness Jill's surname was Meek at birth, became Christie later, and then Knight when she married." I have not yet identified a reliable source for her birth name being Meek but the summary of interview on History of Parliament oral history project mentions that her parents divorced.

I have removed this citation supporting 1924 "According to the Birth records of the General Registry Office of England and Wales, digitized at findmypast.co.uk, the birth of Joan C Christie was registered in 1924:

Jill Knight New Cross Fire slogan claim[edit]

There's a real problem with the suggestion that a slogan from the march after the New Cross house fire said "Dame Jill Knight set the fire alight" - which is that Jill Knight was not made a Dame until 5 years after the fire took place. I've tried looking for a reference for this - but all I can find are the odd references that come back to Wikipedia.
