John or Jhon?[edit]

According to the official website of Southampton Football Club, the subject's first name is correctly spelt Jhon.

It would appear that Jhon is the name he was given at birth but was Anglicised to John upon his arrival in England. Whether this Anglicisation was intentional is unknown. Throughout the media, he is widely referred to using the name John.

Any opinions on whether this page should be renamed to reflect the correct spelling? Jjd27 09:45, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Per Colombian FA, it is John.

You can mention that his name was miss spell as Jhon in his passport, but sure John is correct spelling. Matthew_hk tc 08:40, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As the player's own website [1] spells his first name as "Jhon" that's good enough for me. Daemonic Kangaroo 09:55, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Viafara's first name is spelled "John", but it was misspelled when his club submitted his registration application to the FA, IIRC. Either that or it was misspelled on his passport. Either way, his name is officially "John Viafara". —The preceding unsigned comment was added by PeeJay2K3 (talkcontribs).

You state this as though it is a matter of fact without citing any evidence - the Southampton F.C. website [2] shows him as Jhon, so that should be good enough. The club have seen his documentation - none of us have. Daemonic Kangaroo 16:06, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's also Jhon on BBC News' rumours page today: [3], and as said before, his official website, and Southampton spell it Jhon. Surely he and his club now how his name is spelt? It's also spelt "Jhon" in Football Manager 2007. Jhon appears to be the correct spelling, with John a common misspelling, for obvious reasons. --Dreaded Walrus t c 20:27, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
