Discussing the article[edit]

Needs serious work. I'm really shocked that this article is featured on the Front Page today considering how poorly it's written. Overall, much of the writing is unclear and ambiguous. I don't see any sources here. There are so many run-on sentences that my 12 year old brother could put this article to shame. Seriously. This is awful stuff. I made a few corrections, and then gave up a few sentences later. Good luck to the brave soul that works on this next. Garrrrrr (pirate talk). --161.253.21.219 (talk) 09:34, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So Cartman was wrong! Jews actually CAN be pirates! LOL 98.113.243.169 (talk) 15:49, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discussing the lead[edit]

Interesting article. Needs some work esp in the lead.

The Jewish pirates were first mentioned by Josephus. There’s a drawing of a pirate ship following two merchant ships at the Jason tomb. Seleucid Empire that decay was a result of Maccabees war was infested with Jewish and Arab pirates, who operated from Levant. Maybe the fact that Pompey went to Judea was somehow connected to the presence of Jewish pirates between Cilician pirates.

Some Jews became pirates after they were expelled from Spain, and later Portugal by inquisition.

Jews were experienced cartographers. Some great explorers such as Christopher Columbus and Vasco Da Gama are believed to use their skills. Jews were also working as the ships navigators. The history of Jewish people, the wars, Diaspora ,Inquisition as well as knowledge and skills in ship navigation contributed to developing piracy between Jews.[1] [2]

Third sentence does not read well. Please expand on it. Not clear what is meant. Perhaps if you expand on it here we can have a clearer understanding how best to word it. Second sentence seems to hang there. Not sure it is necessary since you have included the drawing in the article. Perhaps the drawing can mention that it can be found at Jason's tomb. Also I think you will be challenged on some of the material in this first section. You will want some verification for the timeline, and the fact that the great explorers used the skills of Jewish pirates. The last sentence of the lead is also a bit confusing. Was there actually a piracy between Jews? I think not from reading the sources. I think you mean "among." Stellarkid (talk) 05:27, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stellar, thank you for suggestions. I will continue to work on the article adding new data to it, and then I will try to fix the things you suggested. It might be a better idea, if you are to fix those yourself, if you have a time of course. Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 15:29, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mbz1. I am just fixing small things as I have no expertise in this area. I had no idea about this. I did read the Pipes article though, which was quite fascinating. Also this article made me realize that we probably need an article on the Maccabee War(s) since there is not one. Stellarkid (talk) 16:45, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Stellar, just between the two of us I have no expertise in this area either :) I've done some research and now putting something in the article, but your English is so much better than mine is, so please do fix everything you believe should be fixed. Thank you for your help.--Mbz1 (talk) 17:17, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jean Lafitte[edit]

Some sources claim Jean Lafitte was a Jew, while others are not so sure. Should a section about Jean Lafitte be added to the article?--Mbz1 (talk) 15:40, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, adds interest and mystery. He was known as "The Great Jew" was he not? Stellarkid (talk) 16:17, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No Sinan was called "the Great Jew". Section about Sinan is added to the article already.
If I am to add Jean Lafitte section, should I mention controversy about his Jewishness from different sources?--Mbz1 (talk) 16:36, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Additional source[edit]

I find it a very interesting one, eventhough I didn't read much of it.--Gilisa (talk) 16:38, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Very interesting indeed.--Mbz1 (talk) 18:38, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request for clarification[edit]

The following sentences:

Six thousands men were under his command. Ottoman appointed him to be a naval commander.

Do not make much sense to me to be written like that. The second one is grammatically incorrect, but in any case, it's unclear whether they are related. For example, can I write that "The Ottomans appointed him to be a naval commander, in charge of 6,000 men"? Or are those two facts unrelated? —Ynhockey (Talk) 01:06, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the quote from the source:
"Later he commanded 6,000 troops against the fortress at Tripoli, Libya, eventually conquering the city. So angered by the resistance that held Tripoli, he "put the garrison --all save a few -- in chains, and carried them off to grace his triumph." He eventually became the Supreme Ottoman naval commander."
Please do feel free to change the statements in the article as you believe will be right. Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 02:18, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I found its fixed link, and saved a copy to the Wayback Machine: http://www.jewishpress.com/indepth/front-page/putting-the-oy-back-into-ahoy/2008/10/15/ (Editing the main page to include it.
