How much has Gillespie bowled in tests and ODIs?[edit]

The article stated that Gillespie had bowled 14180 test overs and 5144 ODI overs (as at 15 April 2006) but, as evidenced on his cricinfo page [1] (accessed 15 April 2006), the figures refer to deliveries he has bowled. Of course, the fact that he has played 70 test matches would mean that he would have bowled an average of over 200 overs per test for the over figure to be correct. --Roisterer 03:56, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

School Life- After moving from Sydney to Adelaide,Gillespie attended the Prestigous school Cabra Dominican College.At Cabra(his school) he was encouraged to play cricket unlike at his cricket club which had no interest in him playing for them. POV/unbalanced[edit]

Hello. I think this article has veered into POV, following the recent century. Almost half the article is about the Bangladesh tour, and the following gives the impression that he is a genius batsman

Jason Gillespie's highest test score (201*) is better than those of such well recognised Australian batsmen as Steve Waugh (200), David Boon (200), Ian Chappell (196), Darren Lehmann (177), Damien Martyn (165) and Mark Waugh (153*).

Why is his century any less genuine then any other batsman? Do we disregard from players stastics any scores they attained against weaker teams? Is Michael Husseys century against West Indies not counted because they are not the team they were ten years ago? A week ago everyone was saying how great Bangladesh were, and now Gillespie has made 201 against them they are no longer a valid international team. No other batsman has made 200 against Bangladesh in test cricket, now someone has it's Bangladesh fault not his achievement.

I am not suggesting at all that we scale his statistics or not count his numbers against Bangladesh.

  1. The trivia paragraph I pointed out could possibly give the impression that Gillespie is a better batsman than those mentioned - which would be inappropriate. At Talk:Sachin Tendulkar, a reference to the term "golden arm" (a term which refers to his knack of being a partnership-breaker, and applies only to part-time bowlers) was removed because it possibly gave the impression that he was comparable to an exceptional specialist bowler.
  2. Counting the Bangladesh trivia gives about 20% on the current bangladesh tour. What I also meant was that excluding the generalities, most of the specific cricket events are from the Ashes onwards - the other being the Steve Waugh collision.

No, it indicates that he has achieved something that they were unable to do. Bradman only made 0 in his last test, but his batting average reflects his ability with the bat, as does Gillespie’s.

There has also been greater interest in Gillespie post Ashes, that is why a substantial amount of information relates to this period in time. The majority of the information of this article was gathered post Ashes, feel free to gather pre ashes details on Gillespie to contribute to this article.

Batting[edit]

This looks a bit odd, but (as often happens) I'm not sure how to fix it:

He has occasionally proven his worth with the bat, with a Test high of 201* and a one-day international high of 44*. He averages over 18 in Tests...'

I think it does need to be mentioned that before the 201, Gillespie's Test HS was 54; as things stand it gives the impression that he was a Warne-class batsman, regularly hitting 70s, 80s and 90s. On another note "busted feet" is clear, but not very encyclopaedic; could someone who knows the medical details fix that, please? Loganberry (Talk) 10:38, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Possible Copyright Violation[edit]

I have deleted a couple of bits from the Trivia section that were copied word for word from Cricinfo. Not sure where we stand with this so I though it was better to be safe than sorry. 

         Most of this article is lifted from Cricinfo. The claim that between his debut and the 2005 Ashes he played 52 tests is clearly a misinterpretation of Cricinfo's stat regarding his early career injury problems.

Dropped after 200[edit]

I believe that Jason Gillespie may be the only player ever in Test Cricket to be dropped after scoring 200. Can anybody confirm this? GK1 15:10, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Who is 'Carrot Yousuf'? Is this supposed to be common knowledge?

Domestic Career[edit]

This article needs serious revision. For a start there is virtually no reference to his 14 year long domestic career in Australia, the material on his Australia career is sorely deficient, apart from a huge amount of not very interesting 'trivia' about his double century against Bangladesh. Given that he is a bowler who played over 70 tests, why is there no reference to any of his bowling performances for Australia?

nickname[edit]

In England he was referred to as "Caravan" throughout the 2005 Ashes series, because of his supposed resemblance to a Gypsy. His every move was greeted with chants of "Gip-po ! Gip-po !" and the song "where's your caravan ?" was sung to the tune of Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep. Although these songs are themselves arguably racist, virtually no one in the UK had any inkling of either his Aboriginal or Greek heritage - he got the stick purely because of his hairstyle. ( and his poor bowling form )
