The article seems to be biased toward a nationalist point of view. The assassination focuses on the assassin rather than the victim. There are no references cited. Little is said about the assassin motivations and the one that makes sense is discarded without citing references to explain why it is inconsistent according to historians (which historians?). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.26.204.2 (talk) 11:24, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be many sources citing the abolishment of slave trade as one of the plausible motivations in the killing: http://www.sabrizain.org/malaya/perak2.htm http://www.magickriver.org/2009/04/man-who-should-be-king.html http://disclosememory.blogspot.it/2009/08/james-w-w-birch.html (in particular the first link contains part of the book 'James Wheeler Woodford Birch' in 'Malay Sketches' by Frank Swettenham (London: John Lane , 1895) - a direct memory of Swettenham which was a contemporary of Birch, also resident in Malaysia at the time) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.26.204.2 (talk) 11:29, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would also be in favor of splitting this article into a biographical entry on Birch and a separate entry dealing with his assassination. I have not been able to find much on his career before he became Colonial Secretary in the Straits Settlements, except for a reference somewhere to his having spent the earlier part of his career in Ceylon. He does not seem to have been an important enough figure to merit an entry in the Dictionary of National Biography. I wonder if anyone might have access to additional sources that would allow us to work up a proper biographical entry for him? Laughing sandbags (talk) 13:13, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
