As I seriously doubt that these are Industry firsts, I deleted the following:

- A fully segregated propulsion and dynamic positioning system assuring single fault survival.

- Ability to dynamically position alongside a platform without any anchor restraints.

- Capability to escape from alongside a platform having an uncontrolled gas release.

- Water-jet cutting equipment capable of cutting steel in a hazardous gas environment.

I have reinstated these deletions and added some extra information. As a member of the original design team for BP Shipping, I have access to all the main design particulars and took part in supervision of construction and the commissioning and sea trials. The main fire monitors with a range of 180m, dynamic positioning system the waterjet cutting edquipment and emergency evacuation gangway with heave compensation, were all specially developed by their manufacturers and were a proving ground in their own right! Does User BoH have my pedigree?


That all that is purpose manufactered doesn't mean it's an industry first. Claiming that DP on the Iolair is an industry first is just not true. So I reverted it again. BoH 08:53, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What you may doubt does not make you correct and in any case why revert all the extra information? Perhaps you should consider providing some fact or evidence to support your doubts?

All the information I have given, was verified at the time and could be checked again now if you wanted to. What I claimed was not that DP was a first but the system capability to dp alongsidce a platform without anchor restraints. She had to prove that capability beforfe any of the field operators would give permission for this and was (at the timed) the only vessel to be allowed so to do. The fully segregated systems were part of the security enabling this. I was leader of the team responsible for the electrical & control systems and can claim some authority for what I say. It was after Iolair that Classification Societies began to re-evaluate their Rules and develop categories for dp systems so that owners and operators could have common standards for evaluation of their capabilities. I was involved in that too, hence I know it was an "Industry First".

I suggest you check your presumptions of doubt and then reinstate all of my verifiable fact including the historic dates and Shipbuilder name, for which you asked!


You supply the statement; you supply the verifications. As someone who knows what he is looking for, that shouldn't be so hard. And if you're correct, please phrase it differently, because as it was written down, it looks as if it's the first DP vessel. BoH 13:23, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]


I have nothing to prove, only a desire to help others who are lessd well informed in what is a spedcialist area. I have given two references from a reliable source (from many presentations and discussions at the time). As I have no desirfe to hedlp thosse who don't want to be helped, I shall not waste morfed of my time and leave you the poorer for it. As the sa\ying goes, "when ignorance is bliss ...."
