Article rename

As the competition is now called Worthing Birdman, and originally it was Selsey Birdman, should we not move this page to a more generic term? How about just International Birdman or is that going to cause controversy with the rest of the world?

Alternatively, we could move it to International Worthing Birdman, and International Bognor Birdman will be a redirect.

• I'm moving it to International Birdman. I cannot see any competing claims for International Birdman, and the original form of International (place) Birdman seems to have been incorrect anyway looking at the official site. Putting Worthing in may only cause issues if/when it gets moved again, so lets leave explanation of the various venues to the article. MickMacNee (talk) 19:30, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Back to Bognor

I have changed the links back to Bognor as it will be running its Birdman again this year. I appears there never was a good reason for it not to run, it just took someone with some "get up and go" to prove it ;) This does mean we now have a split. As Bognor is the Original event, and Sir Patrick Moore one of the founders of the event in 1971 is a patron on the Bognor event it makes sense its considered the original and worthing a copy of that original event. Would the anonymous person that changed this article to say the International Birdman has permanently moved away from Bognor please discuss the matter here before changing the main page again. Bognor Regis will be hosting its world famous event this year and as the first of the two towns to host the event by some 30yrs, being responsible for promoting it over the last 32 years, building it into the international event it is today and having the support of Sir Patrick Moore CBE FRS FRAS (founder in 1971), The Duke of Richmond & Gordon, Sir Richard Branson, Dr. Adam Hart-Davis, Pam Ayres MBE. Its fair to say the Original Birdman is in Bognor, and to say it is not is simply incorrect and misleading. Amunra reborn (talk) 23:10, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

If nobody owns the trademark "International Birdman" or is calling their organising company (just) "International Birdman", and if for whatever reason (I really could care less why), there are now two events calling themselves the the 'International Birdman' or variations thereof, then the only thing I can see happening is International Birdman becoming a disambiguation page, and the content being split between International Bognor Birdman and Worthing International Birdman, appearing to be the current names of the two events. Wikipedia naming policy frankly doesn't give a toss who out of two warring parties thinks they have more 'right' to being called 'International Birdman', it only goes on what is proveable, and what is proveable is that on a Google Search for 'International Birdman, both the sites for Bognor and Worthing appear in the results. I think that makes a lot of sense. There are now two events and the "International Birdman" is not specific to either. Although there is a lot of shared information unless the Worthing Birdman page starts in 2008 linking back to the Bognor one. I am unsure which is the best way to structure these changes. 2009 distance controversy

This section reads in a very biased way in favour of Steve Elkins having been cheated by the organisers and includes archived material about the rules of the competition. The tone of the article is very different to the more balanced articles quoted in the text from the BBC and the local newspaper, the Argus. Peetred (talk) 21:10, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Whatever sunshine, you clearly have a POV invested in this story. Basically the competion has been permanently tarnished by the whole episode (I won't be doing it again and people I know have said the same thing). The fact they tried to him screw over 14cm beggars belief and destroys the good will that existed between the organisers and the events competitors. It's such a pity the organisers have gone to such lengths to manipulate and obfuscate the truth. They even pulled a 1984 to conceal the Elkins' achievement, they deleted and amended the rules and continue to deny these rules exist. Elkins flight was done under the following rules that appeared on pages 11 and 12 of the 2009 entry form:

1.13 The Aviator will be deemed to “cease to fly” when they stop moving forward and have any significant part of their legs or body immersed in the water, or when additional force is gained from any swimming stroke, push or jump from any obstacle.

1.14 'Touching the water does not count against a competitor during a flight and is discounted in all measurements. Video footage will be available to the Judges in the event of any dispute.

2.1 To achieve the £30,000 Jackpot Prize of flying the furthest beyond the 100 metre mark, the Aviator’s head must reach or cross over the measured 100 metre mark inside the prescribed course.

A judge might have just ruled he lost but that's the British legal system for you. Judge for your self, here is the video of Elkins' flight. He clearly achieves the distance under the rules because he stops well after the marker buoy. This article should reflect the detrimental effect that this case has had on the reputation of the International Birdman Competition because it's quite clear the organisers have done everything possible to prevent accepting or rewarding Elkins' achievement. 81.132.175.1 (talk) 10:52, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
