Question[edit]

Instead of "IntelliJ IDEA has often been compared to Eclipse, a similar IDE from IBM" shouldn't it read "...from the Eclipse Foundation"? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cote (talkcontribs)

The statement you mentioned has been removed since: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=IntelliJ_IDEA&diff=next&oldid=93288879 as being unsourced. --Vlad|-> 14:51, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:IDEA-logo.gif[edit]

Image:IDEA-logo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The philosophy[edit]

Not sure what that text has to do with a philosophy. It comes across as markety-speak. Should this be labeled as History instead? Probably needs bulked up, and a citation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.48.253.218 (talk) 20:09, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request[edit]

It looks like the "Built in tools and integration" section could be updated with minor edits: besides the mentioned support for build tools, database tools, and version control systems, IntelliJ IDEA also provides a GUI-based test runner. The following test frameworks are supported: JUnit, TestNG, Spock; Cucumber, ScalaTest, spec2, and Karma.[1]. Another tool that is huge enough to be mentioned is the Java debugger with GUI.[2]. Finally, I would also add Maven to the list of mentioned build tools, as it is one of the most popular.

Updated text with the mentioned suggestions:

Built in tools and integration[edit]

The IDE provides[3] integration with build/packaging tools like grunt, bower, gradle, Apache_Maven, and SBT. It supports version control systems like Git, Mercurial, Perforce, and SVN. Databases like Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQLite and MySQL can be accessed directly from the IDE in the Ultimate edition, through an embedded version of DataGrip. IntelliJ IDEA also provides a GUI-based test runner with support for the popular test frameworks (JUnit, Cucumber_(software), and others), and a Java debugger with graphical user interface.   Unable to implement

  • Your edit request could not be implemented because the provided references are not formatted correctly. The citation style predominantly used by the IntelliJ IDEA article is Citation Style 1 (CS1). The citation style used in the edit request consists of bare ref tags.[a] Any requested edit of yours which may be implemented will need to resemble the current style already in use in the article – in this case, CS1.
  • In the extended section below titled Citation style, I have illustrated two examples: one showing how the edit request was submitted, and another showing how requests should be submitted in the future:
Citation style
Bare ref tag formatting:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337 miles,[1] while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.[2] The Sun's temperature is 5,778 Kelvin.[3]

References

1. "The Sun"
2. "The Moon"
3. "More About the Sun"

In the example above there are three ref tags used as references, but these ref tags have not been placed using Citation Style 1, which is the style predominantly used by the IntelliJ IDEA article. Using this style, the WikiFormatted text should resemble the following:

Citation Style 1 formatting:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337 miles,<ref>{{cite book|last1=Sjöblad|first1=Tristan|title=The Sun|url=http://www.booksource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2020|page=1}}</ref> while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.<ref>{{cite journal|last1=Harinath|first1=Prisha|title=Size of the Moon|journal=Science|issue=78|volume=51|url=http://www.journalsource.com|date=2020|page=46}}</ref> The Sun's temperature is 5,778 Kelvin.<ref>{{cite web|last1=Uemura|first1=Shu|title=The Sun's Heat|url=http://www.websource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2020|page=2}}</ref>

Which displays as:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337 miles,[1] while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.[2] The Sun's temperature is 5,778 Kelvin.[3]

  3. ^ Uemura, Shū. The Sun's Heat. Academic Press, 2020, p. 2.

In the example above the references have been formatted according to Citation Style 1, which shows the author, the source's name, date, etc., all information which is lost when only the links are provided. As Wikipedia is a volunteer project, edit requests such as yours are generally expected to have this formatting done before the request is submitted for review.

  • Kindly resubmit your edit request below this post at your earliest convenience, taking care to ensure that it makes use of CS1. If you have any questions about this formatting please don't hesitate to ask myself or another editor. Regards,  Spintendo  10:25, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

  1. ^ The use of bare ref tags as references is a style which is acceptable for use in Wikipedia. However, general practice dictates that the style already in use for an article be the one that is subsequently used for all future additions unless changed by editorial consensus.[1]

If the article you are editing is already using a particular citation style, you should follow it.

What the heck does the "IC" stand for?[edit]

The "community edition" download is named ideaIC-2020.1.tar.gz, the contained folder is labeled idea-IC-201.6668.121. I haven't seen the "IC" _anywhere_ on the JetBrains homepage. What does it stand for? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.141.153.193 (talk) 07:11, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Their downloads for "IDEA Community", "IDEA Edu", and "IDEA Ultimate" are prefixed with "ideaIC-", "ideaIE-", and "ideaIU-" respectively, so I suppose that "IC" stands for "IDEA Community". Gmarmstrong (talk) 11:18, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Request- Link in the citation[edit]

Hi, there is an outdated link in the citation no.5.
The previous page has been stopped, so the link needs to be updated.
I might be able to edit the broken-link myself, but I am with a conflict of interest (COI) on this page and would like to write here first.
So, please tell me if I am allowed to do it, otherwise I would appreciate your help.

Hi JB2020M, that link doesn't seem to mention anything about commercial / non-commercial use? (although the previous one did. I've set the dead link to its archived version for now. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 15:28, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Request- Link in the citation[edit]

Hi, ProcrastinatingReader and Altamel, thanks for you help for the last request. I have something to ask you additionally regarding the reference link in the citation, now no.7. The information on the page in webarchive is correct, but I think it would be better to have a valid webpage. I have found a webpage which has answers for the topic. Could you please update the link if the webpage is appropriate as a reference?

JB2020M (talk) 14:50, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JB2020M, and thanks for your suggestion. I appreciate your concern about having up-to-date references. However, were I to choose between an FAQ page and a discussion forum, even if it is hosted by JetBrains, I would believe that the FAQ is more reliable. I don't know who Serge Baranov is and whether he is authorized to speak on behalf of JetBrains. If you are still concerned, you could have JetBrains post somewhere on their website that IntelliJ IDEA can be used for commercial development. Best, Altamel (talk) 20:48, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Altamel, thanks for your response and advice. I understand your concern and I would like to share the information about the respondent in the discussion forum. The people who are with JB logo on their photo are from the support team. That's why I thought it might be reliable as well. Regards, JB2020M (talk) 12:05, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I think for now the FAQ page can stay. If you find a better source, please feel free to post here again. Altamel (talk) 02:26, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Altamel:, I've got a better source. I think it could be replaced with the new link since it is a proper and up-to-date FAQ page we were looking for. Could you please have a look and implement if you think it's fine? How to pronounce "IntelliJ IDEA"[edit]

I was unsure how to pronounce this, so checked the video materials supplied by JetBrains (including a webinar[1] by the CTO and marketing manager). From what I can tell it's "intelli-juh" (first three syllables of "intelligent" followed by the isolated sound made by a letter J at the start of a word) and then "idea". I've added an IPA for this at the start of the article. If this is incorrect or I've made a mistake, please feel free to correct it. Strontium10538 (talk) 21:35, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
