COI[edit]

One of 30+ articles created for pay. I have tagged this for COI; the tag can can come off after an independent editor reviews for NPOV and sourcing. Please leave a note here when you do that. Jytdog (talk) 04:59, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

article updates?[edit]

Hello. Looking to ask about making some edits/updates to some of the basic information included on this page that isn't quite accurate, and/or outdated. I understand the rules and importance of perception of COI when editing a wikipedia page, so I would like to know the best way to offer third-party articles or updates to the editing community, and let you all make the call on edits. Would this be best way to go about updating this page? Many thanks. 209.33.155.210 (talk) 12:59, 18 August 2016 (UTC) Matt, 8.18.16209.33.155.210 (talk) 12:59, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Conservative" (multiple RS), "bipartisan" (zero RS)[edit]

Therefore, the IJR ought to be described as "conservative" in wiki voice. Snooganssnoogans (talk) 11:25, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Here is my analysis of the sources presented in this version with respect to the claim that IJR is bipartisan.
The following refer to IJR being part of The Trust Project, but don't support the claim of bipartisanship at all. Using them to support this claim is a misrepresentation of the sources and fails WP:V:
  • orbmedia (cite #3)
  • Nieman Lab (cite #4)
  • Poynter (cite #5)
  • Adweek (cite #6)
  • The Trust Project (cites #7 and #8)
The remaining two sources also have issues:
  • Cite #9 is primary (IJR itself), failing WP:RS.
  • Cite #10 (digiday) is the only citation that even slightly supports the claim: "In a riskier move, it's also attempting to transcend its conservative roots by adding a longtime liberal writer to balance the site's political commentary." This would be a valid citation to support the IJR trying to become bipartisan but, in my opinion, is not a valid citation to support the IJR having successfully become bipartisan.
Therefore, it doesn't seem appropriate to change the article to call the IJR bipartisan at this time. --Chris (talk) 20:50, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting change in the lead paragraph[edit]

Information to be added or removed:

Please replace the lead paragraph from the current one: The Independent Journal Review (IJR) is a conservative[1][2][3][4][5] American news and opinion website based in Alexandria, Virginia.[6][7] The publication was founded in 2012 by Alex Skatell.[8] Skatell serves as its CEO, with Camden Stuebe as President and Shushanna Walshe, former political director at ABC News as the Editor-At-Large.[9] The site covers general interest topics including politics, culture, entertainment, and viral news content.

to the proposed new one:

The Independent Journal Review (IJR) is a American news website based in Alexandria, Virginia.[6][7] It was founded in 2012 by Alex Skatell.[8] The website was formerly deemed conservative[1][10][11][12][13] but in 2020, it reincorporated as a cross-partisan, public benefit company practicing liberal journalism.[14][15][16] After the reincorporation, Skatell serves as its Executive Director[17] with Shushanna Walshe, former political director at ABC News, as the Editor-At-Large.[9] The site covers general interest topics including politics, culture, entertainment, and viral news content.

I disagree with the proposed change. The only thing the sources you added supports is that IJR tried to rebrand as "cross-partisan". I would need to see better sourcing that this change actually occurred. I would need to see sources that actually say that IJR is no longer conservative. @Snooganssnoogans the Digiday story is from 2017 which says IJR is planning to change while the News Media Alliance story is from 2020 which mentions that IJR re-incorporated as a public benefit corporation. Both the sources are independent, third-party that qualify WP:V and WP:RS guidelines. The news website may have been conservative in the past but has re-incorporated in 2020 which needs to be updated on the page. the lead paragraph can be:
The Independent Journal Review (IJR) is a American news website based in Alexandria, Virginia.[1] It was founded in 2012 by Alex Skatell.[2] As per media reports, the website was formerly conservative[3][4][5][6][7] but it reincorporated in 2020 as a public benefit company.[8][9] After the reincorporation, Skatell serves as its Executive Director with Shushanna Walshe, former political director at ABC News, as the Editor-At-Large.[10] The site covers general interest topics including politics, culture, entertainment, and viral news content.
I would appreciate if you and MJL can now please re-consider this revision. Thank you. 75.99.252.66 (talk) 20:06, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I don't have any problems to the proposed changes. I only marked the change as not done as a matter of process. If Snooganssnoogans doesn't re-assert their objections within the next few days, ping me again. I'll implement the changes then.
Cheers, –MJLTalk 22:16, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Unless there is RS coverage that says that it has transitioned away (past tense) from being conservative, we can't say it's no longer conservative. We can say "According to reports in 2018, IJR was transitioning towards non-profit status". Snooganssnoogans (talk) 22:26, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with @Snooganssnoogans. A quick google search about this reveals several articles about IJR’s attempts to rebrand itself, as well as fact checks and media bias articles referencing IJR’s conservatism. I searched for and did not find any RS validation of the claim that the site is no longer conservative-leaning. Go4thProsper (talk) 15:34, 22 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Go4thProsper: When I commented the other day, I checked Media Bias/Fact Check which scored them as "Least Biased" (AllSides.com gave it Leans Right).
Having done a bit more digging, I can see a lot of outlets refer to this site as conservative as late as 2017.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
For what it's worth, C-Span doesn't refer to the site as Conservative.
75.99.252.66, it's rebranding/reorganization will probably need some time to take effect. I've added a tag that will inform readers that this article is in need of an update in the meantime. –MJLTalk 01:25, 23 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
