numerous young grandmasters[edit]

The article mentions "numerous young grandmasters". Can some of these grandmasters be listed? Do they really have the GM title? Bubba73 (talk), 20:28, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My guess is no. It may be a language difficulty. (Perhaps the person who added that commentary isn't aware of the precise meaning of grandmaster.) Also, if Jonathan Ray Fortune is a CM, FIDE doesn't seem to know about it: http://ratings.fide.com/seek.phtml?idcode=&name=fortune&offset=0 I think the unreferenced parts should be removed in a few days if not cited. 24.177.121.141 (talk) 08:09, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree—as Mr. Fortune is probably a non-notable chess player (by CM, it seems he meant Correspondence Master, nevertheless he has no FIDE rating), naming some of the other GMs (or even IMs) that Novikov has helped must be more of a priority than giving himself a namecheck. Hmmm, I see, 2200+ at corresp. entitles you to use "Master" (Life Master), despite being only 1500+ at OTB chess - I do find that hard to reconcile, but let's hope the USCF know what they're doing ... regarding the citations, is it just me or do they seem quite random, in that they don't illustrate the points being made in the article. There are chess summer camps and grandmasters, including Novikov do attend them, I think we all understand that, but they still don't show his list of clients, do they? It would be easier to just to leave in the U-21 national squad item, as this shows he is a notable coach and is referenced to the Foygel article, which confirms Novikov's involvement. Regarding Mr. Fortune, he is still is not a notable chess player and shouldn't give himself a namecheck, in my opinion. Brittle heaven (talk) 13:44, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree from removing Fortune from the text and I don't think it should say "young grandmasters" unless there are some specific ones with the GM title. Bubba73 (talk),

Retired?[edit]

I don't know if this should be mentioned in the article or not, but GM Igor Novikov claims to have permanently quit tournament chess. Note that he hasn't played in a tournament in a few years. I'm not positive this should be put into the article, because there's no way to guarantee that he will never play again. He has said repeatedly and openly - in articles, to many people, and in my presence (8 February, 2004 in Asheville, NC, USA) - that he doesn't even like chess, and only played because at the time he had no better way to make a living.
